The UHealth Laboratories Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Toxicologist 1.
CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Clinical Toxicologist 1 analyzes clinical case samples routinely. The incumbent operates within the toxicology laboratory and tests routine and complex samples using GC-MS and LC-MS/MS and other mass spectrometry instrumentation using SPE and LLE sample preparation techniques. The Clinical Toxicologist 1 reviews the patient sample and all QC results.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs tests on routine and complex samples using LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, HS-GC-FID, and GC-MS/MS instrumentation and SPE and LLE sample preparation techniques. Reviews patient sample results and all QC results. Analyzes patient samples to detect and quantify drugs, narcotics, poisons, or other controlled substances using instrumental chemical techniques, including (but now limited to) gas and liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Utilizes software platforms such as ChemStation® and MassHunter® to operate instruments, and Sunquest, UChart, and Microsoft Office. Performs routine maintenance on instrumentation and equipment. Assists with laboratory quality assurance and quality control functions, including QC tracking and routine laboratory duties. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
  • This is an entry-level position. The Clinical Toxicologist I perform analytical testing under the direction and supervision of senior toxicology staff or laboratory leadership.
  • Performs routine testing of clinical samples using established standard operating procedures (SOPs), including sample preparation techniques such as dilute-and-shoot, solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid-liquid extraction (LLE).
  • Operates analytical instrumentation (e.g., LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS) following training and demonstrated competency. Assists with instrument setup, calibration, and routine operation.
  • Performs routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment under guidance.
  • Performs preliminary review of analytical data and quality control (QC) results to ensure completeness and adherence to established acceptance criteria; escalates discrepancies to supervisory personnel.
  • Assists in the preparation of reagents, calibrators, and quality control materials in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Supports laboratory quality assurance and quality control activities, including documentation, QC tracking, and adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Accurately documents all analytical activities and maintains data integrity and proper recordkeeping practices.
  • Assists with sample accessioning and handling, including labeling, logging, and storage of clinical specimens, as needed.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicates effectively with laboratory staff regarding workflow, results, and any analytical issues.
  • Demonstrates willingness to learn and develop proficiency in toxicological analysis, instrumentation, and laboratory operations.
  • All duties are performed in accordance with CLIA and the University of Miami laboratory policies.
