Work EnvironmentData analysis, mapping, report creationData collection, map updates, technical support
Employer & Industry UsageGovernment agencies, environmental firms, urban planningUtilities, transportation, government departments

Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and are used in government and industry settings. The main difference lies in the focus: Entry Level GIS Analysts typically handle data analysis and reporting, while GIS Technicians focus more on data collection and map maintenance. Understanding these distinctions can help job seekers target the right position based on their skills and career goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level GIS Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level GIS Analyst, you need a solid understanding of geographic information systems, spatial data analysis, and cartography, typically supported by a degree in geography, GIS, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and basic programming or database management skills are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication abilities help you interpret data accurately and present findings effectively to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for producing reliable spatial analyses, supporting decision-making, and contributing value to projects involving geographic data.

What does an Entry Level GIS Analyst do?

An Entry Level GIS Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting geographic data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. They assist in creating maps, maintaining geospatial databases, and supporting projects that require spatial analysis. Typical tasks may include data cleaning, map production, and basic spatial analysis to support decision-making in fields like urban planning, environmental science, or transportation. This role often involves collaborating with more experienced analysts and learning advanced GIS techniques on the job.

What types of projects do entry-level GIS Analysts typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other team members?

Entry-level GIS Analysts often support a variety of projects such as mapping utilities, environmental monitoring, urban planning, or transportation analysis. Their responsibilities typically include collecting and managing spatial data, creating maps, and performing basic spatial analyses. They frequently collaborate with engineers, planners, and senior GIS staff to ensure data accuracy and project requirements are met. Teamwork and communication are essential, as GIS Analysts often need to interpret feedback and provide technical support to non-GIS colleagues.

What Does an Entry Level GIS Analyst Do?

As an entry-level geographic information systems analyst (entry-level GIS analyst), your responsibilities relate to the analysis of data collected by mapping software and the visualization of relevant information. Your duties depend on the purpose of your surveys, but you typically report to a senior researcher or geographer. You can use the spatial data obtained from GIS software for making digital maps, creating reports to assist in policy decisions about land use, or for research purposes. You often visualize your analysis by creating maps that show relevant statistics (such as population density, crime rates, traffic flow, and so on).

About Aquila

Aquila Corporation is a fast-growing engineering and construction firm that designs and builds next-generation telecom and fiber-optic infrastructure. Founded in 2019, we began by performing site acquisition and permitting for 5G small cell networks. Within a year we expanded into full A&E design services, and by 2022 we were designing complete fiber-optic networks for Internet Service Providers. In 2023 we added construction services — and today, with around 100 employees, we’re continuing to grow rapidly as an integrated design-build partner for telecom providers across the U.S.

Aquila combines engineering precision with the agility of a startup. We leverage modern tools, data, and technology to bring broadband infrastructure to life efficiently, intelligently, and at scale.
