Job description

Summary

The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a caring, compassionate, and reliable Medical Assistant II to support the clinicians providing primary care services to private practice patients.

As a Medical Assistant II, you will assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the physician. The main responsibilities include interviewing patients, measuring vital signs, and recording information on patient's electronic chart using EPIC.

This position is located at our River Oaks clinic and shifts may include 7:30-4:30; 8:00-5:00; 9:30-6:30 Monday-Friday, however we anticipate that this position will be a closer, so we are seeking candidates who are comfortable with working until 6:30pm.

This location offers free parking.

Job Duties
  • Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, and in some cases administering tests such as EKGs.
  • Answers clinic telephones and resolves issues or routes calls to appropriate person.
  • Collects patient histories, including medication reconciliation.
  • Correctly collects and labels patient specimens for lab analysis.
  • Sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Schedules patient tests and appointments and prepares patient charts.
  • Maintains patient and services rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Takes an inventory of clinic supplies and orders new supplies and equipment.
  • Sorts clinic mail and files patient medical records.
  • Floats to other FCM clinic locations as needed.
  • Educates patients about their conditions and self-care per protocols and provider direction.
  • Assists providers as needed in filling out health related paperwork for patients.
  • Staffs central College sites as needed.
  • Cross trains to gain proficiency in staffing Comm Center, monitoring inventory and converting visits to virtual appointments.  
  • Assists with scheduling and checking in of patients.
  • Monitors assigned provider baskets, complete high priority messages and addresses incoming patient encounters.
  • Serves as a resource for navigating complex patient inquiries or procedural nuances.
  • Provides guidance to entry level Medical Assistants on best practices and departmental workflows, contributing to the overall training and development of less experienced staff as needed.
  • Assists with the on-boarding process for new hires by demonstrating key procedures and sharing insights into our specific operational requirements.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration Required: Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, AAH, AAMP, or NPS).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of health care field and medical terminology.
  • Ability to type at a minimum of 40 WPM.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
