Job Description
AECOM is seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental Team in Long Beach, California. The successful candidate will support environmental investigation, monitoring, and remediation projects throughout Southern California while working alongside experienced scientists, geologists, and engineers. This role offers a mix of field and office responsibilities, including environmental data collection, site investigations, technical reporting, and project support.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support environmental site investigations, monitoring programs, and remediation projects under the guidance of project managers and technical leads.
  • Collect environmental samples including soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air, and soil vapor.
  • Coordinate with and oversee subcontractors, including drilling, excavation, survey, and laboratory services.
  • Maintain accurate field records, logs, chain-of-custody documentation, and photographic documentation.
  • Manage, organize, and review environmental field and laboratory data.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports, tables, figures, and other project deliverables.
  • Support development of site conceptual models and interpretation of environmental data.
  • Follow AECOM, client, and regulatory requirements while maintaining a strong safety culture.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% as project needs require.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments and varying site conditions.
  • Must successfully pass a motor vehicle records review, substance screening, and medical surveillance program as conditions of employment.
  • U.S. citizenship required due to project requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting environmental investigations or remediation projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in field and office environments, including internships, research projects, or academic fieldwork.
  • Experience with environmental sampling techniques and field documentation practices.
  • Experience supporting soil borings, monitoring well installation, or other subsurface investigations.
  • Strong technical writing, data management, and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Experience working with environmental contractors or field teams.
  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Current First Aid/CPR training.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and environmental stewardship.
