Environmental Planner
Department: Natural Resources & Environmental Planning
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: New Haven, CT
Compensation: $66,000 - $76,000 / year
Description
Creativity. Innovation. A desire to effect positive change. That's what it takes to work at Fuss & O'Neill - because that's what we do for the communities in which we work: we create, innovate, and design long-lasting improvements that improve quality of life. Quality of life is also important on the job, so we've prioritized work-life balance by offering flexible/remote work opportunities, part-time benefits, and generous PTO. We believe that each day is an opportunity to support one another, to support our clients, and to support our communities. If you feel the same, then you've found your future.
We're seeking an Environmental Planner to join our growing Natural Resources & Environmental Planning team. This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career professional who is passionate about climate resilience, environmental planning, GIS, and community engagement. You'll collaborate with planners, scientists, engineers, and landscape architects on projects that help municipalities and communities prepare for environmental challenges while enhancing the places people live, work, and play.
Key Responsibilities
As an Environmental Planner, you'll support a diverse portfolio of environmental planning and climate adaptation projects throughout the Northeast. Responsibilities include:
  • Assist with planning and facilitating community engagement initiatives, including public workshops, charrettes, resilience planning sessions, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Perform environmental, spatial, and geospatial analyses using ArcGIS Pro and develop high-quality mapping deliverables.
  • Support environmental assessments, data collection efforts, and analytical methodologies for planning projects.
  • Contribute to the planning and conceptual design of climate resilience and nature-based solutions, including green infrastructure and climate adaptation strategies.
  • Prepare technical reports, planning documents, grant applications, presentations, and outreach materials for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, planners, and landscape architects to develop innovative, community-focused solutions.
  • Assist with project coordination, research, data analysis, and client deliverables while meeting project schedules and quality expectations.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, Environmental Science, or a closely related field (master's degree is a plus).
  • Typically requires 0-3 years of professional experience, preferably in environmental planning, climate resilience, sustainability, or related consulting work. Internship experience will be considered.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and public audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced consulting environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting climate adaptation or resilience planning initiatives.
  • Experience working with municipal clients or public agencies.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Progress toward obtaining AICP certification is a plus.

This is a hybrid role, offering the best of both worlds-collaborate in-office with a high-performing team and enjoy the flexibility of working remotely part of the week. We're committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining strong team connection and project delivery.
Why You'll Love Working with Us
  • Schedule Flexibility: Customize your work schedule to fit your life.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive health benefits to keep you and your family healthy.
  • Continuous Learning: Access to online courses, conferences, and learning materials to fuel your professional growth.
  • Paid Time Off: Take the time you need to recharge with our generous paid time off policy.
  • Career Advancement: Clear paths for promotions and the opportunity to take on new challenges.
  • Fun Team Culture: Regular team-building activities, happy hours, and company outings.
