Entry Level Embedded information

What is an entry level embedded engineer?

Entry level embedded engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test software and hardware systems that are 'embedded' within devices, such as consumer electronics, automotive systems, or industrial machines. These engineers usually work with microcontrollers, processors, and real-time operating systems to ensure products function as intended. At the entry level, they typically assist with coding, debugging, and integrating embedded systems under the supervision of senior engineers. This role requires a foundational knowledge of programming languages like C or C++, as well as an understanding of electronics and hardware interfaces.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on as an entry level embedded engineer?

As an entry-level embedded engineer, you'll typically be involved in tasks such as writing and testing firmware, debugging hardware interfaces, and assisting with the integration of software and hardware components. You may also participate in code reviews, document your work, and help with troubleshooting issues that arise during product development. Collaboration with electrical engineers and senior software developers is common, giving you exposure to different stages of the product lifecycle and opportunities to learn from experienced team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level embedded engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Embedded Engineer, a solid understanding of C/C++ programming, basic electronics, and computer architecture is essential, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with microcontrollers, debugging tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and version control systems like Git are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help individuals excel in this role. These competencies ensure reliable embedded system design, smooth team collaboration, and successful delivery of technical solutions.

Brief Job Overview

The Software Engineer – Marketo is responsible for supporting and enhancing the Marketo platform through technical configuration, integration management, campaign automation, and data governance. This role partners with IT, Marketing Operations, and Sales Operations to ensure scalable, reliable, and compliant marketing automation processes. The engineer owns daytoday platform operations while contributing to system improvements and crosssystem alignment.

How will YOU create impact here at USP?

As part of our mission to advance scientific rigor and public health standards, you will play a vital role in increasing global access to high-quality medicines through public standards and related programs. USP prioritizes scientific integrity, regulatory excellence, and evidence-based decision-making to ensure health systems worldwide can rely on strong, tested, and globally relevant quality standards.

Additionally, USP’s People and Culture division, in partnership with the Equity Office, invests in leadership and workforce development to equip all employees with the skills to create high-performing, inclusive teams. This includes training in equitable management practices and tools to promote engaged, collaborative, and results-driven work environments.

The Software Engineer - Marketing Systems & Integrations has the following responsibilities:

  • Support user account creation, access permissions, and role governance across marketing automation and CRM platforms to maintain secure, compliant operations.
  • Translate stakeholder requirements into technical configurations, reusable templates, and scalable operational solutions within a marketing automation platform (e.g., Marketo, HubSpot, Pardot, or similar).
  • Help maintain platform architecture — folder structures, naming conventions, tokens, and operational program frameworks.
  • Build and maintain field mappings and synchronization logic between the marketing platform and CRM (e.g., Salesforce), supporting schema alignment and data quality.
  • Clone, configure, and test forms, landing pages, and web assets in Sandbox and Production environments using HTML/CSS fundamentals.
  • Troubleshoot sync issues between systems, including field conflicts, validation errors, and API-related failures — with support from senior engineers as needed.
  • Assist with datatype changes, schema updates, and cross-system compatibility checks to keep integrations stable.
  • Support Sandbox refresh activities: configuration audits, asset restoration, and sync re-establishment.
  • Help build and maintain trigger-based campaigns, automated workflows, and nurture programs, learning platform-specific logic on the job.
  • Assist with segmentation setup, audience management, and basic data governance practices.
  • Monitor system health and campaign performance dashboards, flagging issues to senior team members.
  • Support data quality and compliance standards across marketing and CRM systems.

Who is USP Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders, along with the following competencies and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 1–2 years of experience in a technical, engineering, or systems support role
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS; exposure to basic JavaScript is a plus.
  • Understanding of how APIs and webhooks work, or strong aptitude to learn integration concepts quickly.
  • Interest in or exposure to CRM systems (Salesforce, HubSpot, etc.) and/or marketing automation platforms — prior hands-on Marketo experience is not required.
  • Comfort working with structured data: field mapping, data types, and schema logic.
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and willingness to troubleshoot systematically.
  • Clear communicator, able to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Additional Desired (Nice to Have, Not Required)

  • Any exposure to Marketo, HubSpot, Pardot, or similar marketing automation tools.
  • Familiarity with CRM objects (Leads/Contacts/Accounts/Opportunities).
  • Coursework or personal projects involving REST APIs or third-party integrations (e.g., ad platforms like Google, Meta, or LinkedIn).
  • Certifications are a plus but not expected at this level (e.g., Marketo Certified Associate/Expert, Salesforce Admin).
