What is the difference between Embedded System Intern vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectEmbedded System InternEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; some roles prefer experience
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level projects, supervised tasksFull-time employment, responsible for designing, developing, and testing embedded software
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by tech companies, automotive, consumer electronicsCompanies developing embedded systems in automotive, consumer electronics, industrial automation

The Embedded System Intern role is an entry-level position focused on learning and supporting embedded projects under supervision. In contrast, an Embedded Software Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for developing and maintaining embedded software systems. While both roles require knowledge of embedded systems, the intern position emphasizes learning and skill development, whereas the engineer role involves independent project execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded System Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded System Intern, you typically need a solid grounding in computer engineering or electrical engineering fundamentals, with knowledge of C/C++ programming and microcontroller architectures. Familiarity with development tools like Keil, MPLAB, or Arduino IDE, and basic experience with hardware debugging equipment such as oscilloscopes, are often expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly help you excel in team-based projects. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently developing, testing, and troubleshooting embedded solutions in a collaborative engineering environment.

What are some typical projects or tasks an Embedded System Intern might work on during their internship?

As an Embedded System Intern, you can expect to work on projects involving firmware development, microcontroller programming, and hardware-software integration. Interns often assist in writing and testing code for embedded devices, debugging systems, and participating in prototype development. You may also collaborate closely with hardware engineers and software developers, gaining hands-on experience with development tools and real-time operating systems. These experiences provide valuable exposure to the full lifecycle of embedded product development and enhance your technical skills in a supportive team environment.

What are Embedded System Interns?

Embedded System Interns are students or recent graduates who assist in the design, development, and testing of embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. They often work with microcontrollers, sensors, and real-time operating systems under the guidance of experienced engineers. Their responsibilities may include writing and debugging code, assembling hardware prototypes, and supporting firmware updates. This internship provides hands-on experience in embedded systems, which is valuable for careers in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and telecommunications.

Job description

Data & Hardware Operations CoOp/ Intern

Origin AI, an ADT Company

Location: HQ Rockville, MD

About Us:

Origin is redefining home security with TruShieldâ„  Security, a hardware-free, router-based solution powered by our exclusive AI Sensingâ„  technology. TruShield goes beyond motion detection to deliver Verified Human Presenceâ„ , accurately distinguishing between people and non-human activity. By leveraging existing WiFi networks and connected devices, it delivers awareness across the home without cameras, wearables, or additional hardware, eliminating false alarms and elevating protection.

Now part of ADT, Origin strengthens ADT’s promise of trusted protection by adding real-time awareness and context inside the home. When every second counts, knowing what is actually happening, not just that something happened, changes everything.

About the Job:

The AI Engines team is responsible for product-oriented research, data collection, and ML model development for Wi-Fi-based motion sensing: detecting and classifying motion using Channel State Information (CSI) captured from the wireless environment, and integrating that intelligence into embedded applications that run efficiently across many hardware platforms.

This is a high-ownership role with deliberate breadth. You will be the person who keeps collection running and the hardware healthy, freeing our engineers and researchers to focus on models and product. Along the way, you'll get exposure across the full stack hardware, data pipelines, ML, and embedded integration with dedicated time to grow into deeper engineering work.

What You’ll Do:

  • Configure, provision, and maintain device deployments across our data collection fleet. This includes connecting devices to routers and onboarding them in their respective apps.

  • Manage and troubleshoot collection sets; diagnose and resolve issues quickly, including general IT tasks such as logging into router back-ends, IP configuration, and basic network troubleshooting.

  • Run platform performance comparisons and device compatibility testing across our hardware portfolio.

  • Develop, update, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for device onboarding and deployment so setup is repeatable and consistent across platforms.

  • Build and host data collection events; coordinate with external data collection partners and field testers to execute against collection plans.

  • Maintain device and tester inventory so collection coverage aligns with ML model development priorities and product improvement ideas.

  • Keep the team's automated data pipeline running, and perform data quality checks and session-level curation on incoming CSI to meet quality and scope needs.

  • Perform manual ground-truth labeling, including reviewing camera-and-sensor imagery to label motion.

  • Write and run test plans for collection and validation.

  • Dogfood our models daily by running live deployments in-office, surfacing real-world sensing issues back to the team.

  • Support improvements to MATLAB / python-based data processing scripts so they are robust across different collection setups, devices, and data formats.

  • Contribute to embedded integration (C/C++) and ML platform / MLOps tasks as your skills develop.

  • Participate in agile workflows: Sprint planning, code reviews, and stand-ups. Present technical findings to the team.

About You:
  • Able to be on-site in the Rockville, MD area; this role manages physical hardware and cannot be fully remote.

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related discipline. Candidates must have completed at least three years of undergraduate study by the start of employment.

  • Comfortable with networking fundamentals (e.g. routers, IP configuration, device back-end access, and basic troubleshooting).

  • Hands-on experience with at least one programming language (MATLAB, C/C++, or Python).

  • Detail-oriented, self-directed learner who thrives in collaborative teams and can diagnose issues and make effective decisions in ambiguous, evolving technical situations.

Preferred Qualifications (in order of priority):
  1. Embedded / systems programming: C/C++ experience on microcontrollers, SoCs, or resource-constrained platforms (ARM Cortex, RTOS, bare-metal). Supports the embedded/QA growth track.
  2. MATLAB: Coursework or project experience, for our data processing scripts.
  3. Signal processing: Coursework or projects in DSP, wireless communications, or related areas (FFT, filtering).
  4. Machine learning: Familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch, ONNX, TensorFlow Lite) or data-quality practices for AI/ML.
  5. Data collection & tooling: Structured data collection and logging practices; familiarity with Airtable or similar.
  6. AWS & agile tooling: Exposure to AWS (S3, etc.) and Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence) in a team-based environment.
What We Can Offer You
  • Full healthcare package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, life, and AD&D insurance

  • 401(k) + 5% company match

  • Flexible paid time off policy

  • Onsite gym

  • Tuition reimbursement program & Continued Learning Program
