As of Jul 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry level embedded systems in California is $135,476.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $110,000.00 and $161,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is embedded systems still worth it in 2026?

Embedded systems remain a valuable field in 2026, as they are integral to industries like automotive, healthcare, and consumer electronics. Skills in microcontrollers, real-time operating systems, and programming languages such as C and C++ are in demand, and the growth of IoT devices continues to drive job opportunities for entry-level embedded systems engineers.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most entry-level embedded systems engineers earn significantly less, senior engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and leadership roles can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries or companies with lucrative compensation packages. Such roles often require advanced certifications, expertise in hardware and software integration, and may include bonuses or stock options.

Will AI replace embedded systems?

AI is unlikely to replace embedded systems entirely, as embedded systems are specialized hardware and software designed for specific tasks. Instead, AI can enhance embedded systems by enabling smarter functionalities, but skills in programming, hardware integration, and real-time operation remain essential for embedded systems professionals.

What is an Entry Level Embedded Systems job?

An Entry Level Embedded Systems job involves designing, developing, and testing software and hardware for embedded devices, such as microcontrollers, IoT devices, and automotive systems. Engineers in this role typically work with programming languages like C and C++, embedded operating systems, and real-time systems. They may assist in debugging, optimizing code, and interfacing with hardware components. This position provides a foundation in embedded development, allowing engineers to gain experience with industry tools and protocols. It is ideal for recent graduates or those transitioning into embedded systems from related fields.

What are some typical responsibilities of an entry level embedded systems engineer?

As an entry level embedded systems engineer, your daily tasks may include writing and testing code for microcontrollers, assisting in circuit design, debugging embedded software, and supporting hardware-software integration. You'll often work closely with other engineers on tasks like prototyping, system validation, and troubleshooting, while learning industry-standard development workflows. You may also be involved in updating technical documentation and participating in team meetings to discuss project goals and challenges. These responsibilities provide foundational experience and exposure to various aspects of embedded systems development, preparing you for more advanced roles as you gain skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Entry Level Embedded Systems position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Embedded Systems professional, you need a solid understanding of C/C++ programming, digital electronics, and basic knowledge of microcontrollers or microprocessors, typically supported by a degree in electrical, computer, or software engineering. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, integrated development environments (IDEs), and source control systems such as Git is often required, and certifications like ARM Accredited Engineer can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively help individuals excel in this role. These technical and interpersonal abilities are crucial for developing reliable embedded solutions, troubleshooting complex issues, and contributing effectively to multidisciplinary engineering teams.

How to start a career in embedded systems?

To start a career in embedded systems, gain a strong foundation in electronics and programming languages like C and C++, and learn to work with microcontrollers such as Arduino or ARM-based platforms. Job description

Overview
We are CalAmp, a connected intelligence company that gives people the ability to track, monitor and recover their vital assets with real-time visibility and insights.
Currently, we are seeking an Engineer I, Test based in Carlsbad, CA.
This is an exciting opportunity for those who align with our core values (Inclusion, Innovation, Execution, Customer Success) and for those who desire to build, sell, and/or support connected solutions and services.
Responsibilities
This role is an entry level Test Engineer position for CalAmp mobile devices supporting internal telematics device testing tools and data platforms within the Vehicle Engineering group.
Core Responsibilities
  • Develop code to extract data elements from multiple 3rd party sources including Excel, MS Access, JSON, XML, or PDF files.
    • This code needs to create intermediate files or common format using Excel that can be ingested into an SQL database.
    • Assist with the ingestion of this data into the SQL database.
  • Maintain and enhance existing internal C# diagnostic and automation applications used to support telematics device validation and communication workflows.
    • MQTT broker integrations, topic subscription/publish flows, and routing
    • Serial communication subsystems: .NET COM interfaces, USB/COM detection, async port management, retry/fault-recovery logic
    • CAN and J1939 data capture, decoding, logging, filtering, and replay
  • Support automated test execution software used to validate embedded communication behavior and system functionality.
    • Loading and running modular XML test definitions
    • Improving execution reliability, reporting clarity, and logging traceability
    • Debugging communication paths across CAN, MQTT, serial, and server interfaces

Qualifications
