Job description

The Software and Electronics Engineering Group collaborates with every research area at the Laboratory to create systems that accomplish their objectives in real-world scenarios and in unpredictable surroundings. Our engineers develop complex software and electronics systems, from concept to realization, for a variety of prototypes. We utilize the applied research approach to work on capabilities such as pointing and stabilization techniques to enable efficient space-based laser communication, and to build prototypes such as a ground-based sensor to detect biological threats in real time. Our engineers are developing airborne visual navigation; flight controls; and on-orbit pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems. We have expertise in space-qualified electronics, precision controls, firmware, embedded software, and application software.

Position Description

Group 76, Software and Electronics Engineering, is seeking an Electronics Engineer to work on mixed-signal, analog, digital, RF, or power electronics systems.ย ย Activities may include electronics design, analysis, implementation, and integration & test of hardware/software systems in a laboratory setting.ย ย The successful candidate will be able to contribute to multi-disciplinary teams executing advanced research and independently solve technical challenges.ย ย Occasional travel to support field exercises, presentations to sponsors and the community, and other events may be required.ย ย Staff in this position willย have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and begin to lead small teams over time.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related fieldย  (A bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience will be considered)
  • Experience with the design of mixed-signal, analog, digital, RF, or power circuitsย 
  • Experience with the full development lifecycle of PCBs from requirements through testing and integrationย 
  • Experience using test equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, waveform generators, spectrum analyzers, and logic analyzersย 
  • Test design, procedure development, and execution in a laboratory or manufacturing settingย 
  • Familiarity with circuit simulation tools such as PSpice,ย SimScapeย 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary teamย 
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coherently convey complex technical details to both technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred Qualifications (2 or more of the following)
  • Background in satellites, autonomous vehicles, or modern controls
  • Experience with FPGA firmware development using VHDL, Verilog, or System Verilog to model, design, simulate, test, and implement FPGA-based systems
  • Experience developing real-time embedded software in C++ using VxWorks (or similar)
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Python, Ruby or similarย languages to develop tools and utilities to support hardware design and test efforts
  • Experience developing low level drivers
  • Experience with revision control systems such as git
  • Experience with PCB design / layout
  • Familiarity with radiation, screening and derating requirements for high-reliability, space-rated EE components
  • Ability to perform Worst-Case Circuit or Derating Analyses for electronic design, rapid troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
  • Experience leading small teams of technical contributors

Recent Graduate Hiring Range: $116,400 - $140,000

Experienced Hiring Range: $116,400 - $182,200
