What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO) and the Rapid Response Team (PFE-RRT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking an Electrical Engineer. Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)
The selected candidate will support LANL's mission by contributing technical expertise in electrical engineering for nuclear facilities. In this role, you'll assist in ensuring electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, and critical power reliability within and around the plutonium facility. You'll also support projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development. Your responsibilities may include performing engineering studies such as short-circuit analysis, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting design, fault current calculations, and arc flash assessments for both medium- and low-voltage systems. You may also support demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities. Successful candidates may have the opportunity to qualify as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) supporting LANL Nuclear Facilities.
In this position, you'll collaborate closely with senior engineers and professionals across multiple disciplines, including fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, to deliver integrated, full-system design solutions. Level 2 engineers are expected to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong technical judgment, communication skills, and a willingness to learn through mentoring and professional development.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($128,000 - $215,900)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, in this level the selected candidate will support LANL's plutonium facility, and play a critical role in ensuring electrical safety, power quality, system monitoring, and the reliability of critical power systems. Your work will directly support the Lab's national security mission by maintaining and enhancing the performance and safety of essential infrastructure in a highly regulated nuclear environment.
You will lead and collaborate on projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development-ensuring all systems meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and compliance. Your responsibilities may include:
Conducting and reviewing complex engineering studies such as:

• Short-circuit analysis
• Device coordination
• Equipment sizing
• Fault current calculations
• Exterior lighting design
• Arc flash assessments for both medium- and low-voltage systems
• Supporting demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities
• Potentially qualifying as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) supporting LANL nuclear facilities

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Knowledge of engineering design, planning, construction, and project or process management practices.
• Experience assisting in the preparation of technical reports and studies to establish and maintain the technical baseline for new and existing facility systems.
• Experience collecting and documenting usage, process, safety, and other performance parameters for structures, systems, or components.
• Experience supporting design or analysis tasks and developing design concepts that meet defined requirements.
• Experience preparing design details, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate applicable design standards and requirements.
• Experience assisting with system health evaluations and trending analyses.
• Experience coordinating and interfacing with other engineering disciplines and customers throughout design development.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

• Advanced knowledge and experience in the design, maintenance, and operation of low-voltage and instrumentation & control (I&C) systems.
• Skilled in applying and interpreting engineering codes and standards in regulated environments, including IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA 70, and NFPA 70E.
• Demonstrated ability to perform complex engineering analyses and develop technically sound, defensible solutions.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical issues to diverse audiences.
• Proven success leading multidisciplinary teams, managing multiple projects, and meeting tight deadlines.
• Experience mentoring others, providing technical direction, and coordinating engineering activities.
• Advanced proficiency with technology-aided design tools (e.g., CAD, CAE) and analytical modeling to support innovative engineering solutions.
• In-depth understanding of safety principles and hazard mitigation in nuclear or industrial facility operations.
• Demonstrated ability to define deliverables and lead safety-related engineering projects from conception through completion.
• Broad knowledge of engineering design, planning, construction, and project management practices.
• Experience preparing and maintaining technical reports, design documentation, and system performance data.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated proficiency in electrical equipment replacement/selection.
• Demonstrated proficiency in electrical safety PPE use or selection.
• Demonstrated proficiency in National Electric Code (NEC).
• Demonstrated proficiency in drafting (AUTOCAD).
• Proven integrity, professionalism, and commitment to technical excellence in all aspects of work.
• LVL 2-3 requirements plus:
• Demonstrated proficiency in SKM Power Tools, Arc Flash Calculations.
• Demonstrated proficiency in UPS, Inverters, Battery Banks.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
