What is an entry level DevOps?

An Entry Level DevOps job involves supporting the development and operations teams by automating workflows, managing cloud infrastructure, and assisting with CI/CD pipelines. Responsibilities may include deploying code, monitoring system performance, and troubleshooting issues. This role typically requires basic knowledge of scripting, cloud platforms, and version control systems like Git. It's a great starting point for those looking to bridge the gap between development and IT operations.

What does an entry level DevOps do?

A typical day for an Entry Level Devops professional often includes monitoring infrastructure, managing deployments, and automating routine tasks under the guidance of more experienced team members. You'll collaborate closely with software developers and IT operations staff to ensure systems run smoothly and resolve any basic technical issues as they arise. Many tasks involve using tools to manage code repositories, update documentation, and contribute to continuous integration pipelines. Over time, you may be given more complex projects, which helps accelerate learning and professional growth within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for an entry level DevOps?

To thrive as an Entry Level Devops, you need a foundational understanding of Linux systems, basic scripting (such as Bash or Python), and experience with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CI/CD tools (like Jenkins or GitHub Actions), version control (Git), and infrastructure as code (Terraform or Ansible) is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication will help you collaborate across technical and non-technical teams. These capabilities are vital for efficiently supporting automated deployments, troubleshooting issues, and enabling seamless software delivery processes.

Can I get an entry level Devops job with no experience?

Entry level DevOps positions often require some foundational knowledge of scripting, automation tools, and cloud platforms, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with limited experience if they demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn. Gaining certifications like AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or learning tools such as Docker and Jenkins can improve your chances. Internships, personal projects, and online courses can also help build relevant skills for entry level DevOps roles.
