Will AI replace developers in 2026?

Entry level developers will continue to play a vital role in software development, as AI tools are designed to assist rather than fully replace human programmers. While AI can automate repetitive tasks and improve productivity, human skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and understanding user needs remain essential for building complex applications. Therefore, AI is expected to augment rather than replace entry level developers by 2026.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or coding bootcamp certification. • Serve as the primary technical liaison by building strong relationships with customer technical counterparts, managing specifications, communicating product changes, and resolving installation issues.
  • Translate customer needs into functional product requirements using deep product, application, and market knowledge to support OEM product selection and equipment design.
  • Ensure flawless installations by validating prototype machine performance, confirming compliance with Cummins requirements, and ensuring products are applied correctly for customer environments.
  • Advance team execution by independently executing established processes, contributing to continuous improvement, coordinating technician or student work when needed, and influencing team goals.
Cummins is an equal opportunity employer. Our policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified persons without regard to race, sex, color, disability, national origin, age, religion, union affiliation, sexual orientation, veteran status, citizenship, gender identity, or other status protected by law.

Core Responsibilities / Activities

  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between OEM customers and cross-functional internal teams during product integration, installation, and issue resolution activities.
  • Lead Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) reviews, support prototype machine validation, and drive timely resolution of customer and field-related technical concerns.
  • Coordinate with Sales, service, controls/calibration, manufacturing, and design engineering teams to support successful product implementation and customer satisfaction.

Skill, Education, or Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related STEM field required.
  • Experience supporting OEM customers, product integration, machine systems, or technical troubleshooting activities.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a customer-focused environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements, installation guidelines, and engineering documentation while working across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Skills or Experience

  • Prior experience with off-highway equipment, engine integration, or Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) processes.
  • Familiarity with Cummins technical systems, OEM development processes, or customer support environments preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate's qualifications and experience, where appropriate.

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Master machine integration by applying Cummins installation standards, optimizing subsystem performance, and resolving technical issues through disciplined troubleshooting.
  • Support machine operation by monitoring system behavior, addressing failures quickly, and adapting solutions to evolving customer needs and operating conditions.
  • Deliver strong product application support by creating accurate technical content, defining installation requirements, and using Cummins tools to guide OEM design and sales decisions.
  • Influence design through modeling and simulation by interpreting analytical and computational results to shape product capability at the system, subsystem, and component levels.
  • Ensure installation quality by validating prototype performance, applying standard Cummins processes, and driving improvements that reduce rework and ensure compliance.
  • Solve product problems effectively by identifying root causes, implementing robust corrective actions, and preventing recurrence through datadriven analysis.
  • Guide product selection by matching customer applications with the right Cummins offerings, optimizing specifications, and preventing misapplication through strong technical judgment.
  • Lead technical customer management by serving as the primary technical interface, communicating product changes, providing engineering data, and ensuring seamless customer integration and operation.
