***This position is an International Corporate Contract Position. All Applicants must be located outside the United States.

Primary Goal: The Translation Desktop Publishing (DTP) Specialist will reconstruct, recreate, and format documents for translation as well as translated documents, graphics, and layouts to match the original source design while adhering to language-specific typographic standards. The DTP Specialist ensures that the final localized product is technically sound and ready for digital or print distribution. The Translation DTP Specialist is responsible for producing high-quality deliverables that align with the client’s requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Multilingual Formatting: Format translated text in various software applications to mirror the original source files, adjusting for "text expansion" (where translated text takes up more or less space than the original), as well as adapting to language-related phenomena such as text direction, diacritic spacing, indexing, alphabetical ordering, etc.
  • Graphic and Typographic Localization: Edit and localize images, screenshots, and diagrams containing text using Adobe Creative Suite. Apply proper typography standards for different languages, including right-to-left (Arabic, Hebrew), logographic languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Asian Languages), and accented European languages.
  • File recreation: Recreate non-editable files into editable formats so that they are suitable for work in a CAT tool. This includes working with Adobe Creative Suite as well as the Microsoft Office Suite. File recreation also includes converting scanned documents into fully editable files before online translation.
  • Template Creation: Develop and maintain document templates and style sheets to ensure brand consistency across all target languages.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct final "eye-balling" checks to catch orphaned lines, incorrect line breaks, font substitutions, incorrect text direction, or corrupted characters (mojibake).
  • Pre-flight & Post-flight: Prepare files for the translation workflow (exporting to IDML or XML) and finalize them for print-ready PDF or digital output.
  • Troubleshooting: Resolve technical issues related to font encoding, right-to-left (RTL) languages like Arabic or Hebrew, and complex script rendering.
  • Task Management: Manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize deadlines, and ensure timely completion. Collaborate with Project Managers and In-house Translators to gather content and feedback. Be responsive, reliable, and able to meet deadlines in a remote setting.
  • Confidentiality: maintain and uphold the confidentiality across tasks and assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Technical Mastery: Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Strong experience with Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint) is essential.
  • Localization Knowledge: Familiarity with Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools (e.g., Trados, Memsource/Phrase) and how they interact with DTP file formats.
  • Typography Expertise: A deep understanding of global typographic rules, including hyphenation, line-break logic, and font management across different character sets (Cyrillic, CJK, Arabic).
  • Attention to Detail: An obsessive eye for layout symmetry, spacing, and visual hierarchy.
  • Redacted file handling: Familiarity with preparing, editing, and laying out redacted documents while maintaining document structure and compliance requirements.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills: The ability to "hack" a layout when the translated text is 30% longer than the original without compromising design integrity.
  • Education/Experience: 2+ years of experience in DTP or Graphic Design, preferably within a translation agency.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint and superior knowledge of Excel
  • Experience with Google Docs and Apple/Mac Operating System preferred
  • Strong Communication skills in English (written and verbal).
