What is an entry level design job?

An entry level design job is a starting position in the design industry, typically suited for recent graduates or those with limited professional experience. These roles often involve assisting senior designers, creating basic design assets, and learning industry tools and workflows. Entry level designers may work in fields such as graphic design, web design, or industrial design, and are expected to have a foundational understanding of design principles and software like Adobe Creative Suite. The goal is to build practical skills, gain experience, and develop a professional portfolio to advance in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in visual communication, and a relevant degree or coursework in graphic, web, or industrial design. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and basic knowledge of design systems or prototyping platforms is important. Strong attention to detail, creativity, collaboration, and openness to feedback set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities enable designers to produce high-quality work, adapt to team needs, and grow in a fast-evolving creative field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an entry-level design professional expect in their first year?

Entry-level design professionals typically work on a variety of supporting tasks, such as preparing drafts, creating visual assets, and assisting with layout or branding projects. They often collaborate closely with senior designers and art directors, gaining exposure to client feedback and the revision process. While responsibilities may start with smaller assignments, there are frequent opportunities to contribute ideas during team brainstorming sessions and to gradually take on more complex projects as skills develop. This hands-on experience is crucial for building a strong portfolio and understanding real-world design workflows.

Job description

Finding the right fit:

If you’re a recent civil engineering graduate with an interest in traffic and transportation or an early-career EIT looking to build real technical depth, this is the role for you. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers on projects that improve safety, mobility, and connectivity for communities across the country.

At Ayres, entry-level engineers aren’t just support staff, they’re contributors. You’ll be mentored closely, given increasing responsibility as you grow, and set up for a clear path toward your PE license.

Join Ayres – a USA TODAY Top Workplace recognized in both 2025 and 2026 – where people-first leadership, collaboration, and professional growth create an environment where great teams do their best work.

On any given day, you’ll:

  • Develop traffic engineering analysis and design skills under the guidance of licensed engineers
  • Support traffic studies, data collection, and operational analysis
  • Prepare engineering calculations, layouts, sketches, diagrams, and technical exhibits
  • Assist in developing plans and design documents for transportation and traffic projects
  • Use engineering and modeling software to help solve traffic and transportation challenges
  • Collaborate with project teams and contribute to on-time, on-budget delivery
  • Follow established project schedules, budgets, and quality standards

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; coursework or interest in transportation/traffic engineering is a plus
  • EIT certification (or eligibility and intent to sit for the FE exam)
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented approach
  • Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and grow under mentorship
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while staying attentive to detail

Desired skills and experiences – helpful but not required:

  • Internship or coursework in traffic engineering, transportation planning, or related areas
  • Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar)
  • Exposure to traffic analysis tools such as Synchro, HCS, or similar
  • Interest in pursuing PE licensure (we actively support this)

Benefits of being part of the Ayres team:

  • Health, dental, and vision Insurance.
  • Short and long-term disability and life insurance.
  • Employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) and 401K with company match.
  • PTO upon hire, paid holidays including two floating holidays, and a flexible work schedule.
  • Professional development opportunities.
