Job Summary

Leads the safe and efficient operations of the Border States fleet including driver performance and coaching, truck routing and dispatch, timely and safe delivery of customer material, preventative and corrective maintenance of fleet assets and material handling equipment and ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations. 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the maintenance and safe operations of all delivery vehicles, forklifts, Moffetts, and trailers in accordance with company policy, equipment leaseholder policies, and/or any government standards.
  • Ensures all drivers meet licensing and medical requirements, including Commercial Driver Licensing (CDL) requirements if they drive vehicles that are above 26,000 lbs. 
  • Maintains current driver qualification records to satisfy our requirements and the requirements of all state and federal regulations. 
  • Leads driver coaching on safe driving performance using current technologies and facilitates all required, proactive, and remedial driver safety training as appropriate.
  • Ensures all drivers understand and follow North American Cargo Securement Standard practices on all loads in all vehicle types.
  • Works closely with warehouse leaders on scheduled delivery routes and scheduling. Manages route optimization tools and dispatching strategy to optimize miles driven, fleet capacity, and customer delivery times. 
  • Establishes and maintains all vehicle, trailer, and forklift maintenance records including preventative and corrective maintenance schedules. 
  • Responsible for all contracted maintenance oversight on all delivery vehicles, trailers, and forklifts.
  • Reviews and analyzes delivery services to provide the most cost-effective delivery solutions. This includes but not limited to decisions of when to use Border States' fleet vs common carrier delivery.
  • Maintains local relationships and strategies with third-party carriers and delivery partners.
  • Manage inbound freight schedules and opportunities with vendor partners.
  • Oversees transportation and monitoring of services fleet assets deployed at customer sites including job trailers and Conex boxes.

Non-essential Functions

  • Collaborate with other driver supervisors across the company to drive standardization and fleet best practices.
  • Supports the delivery expense forecast alongside the branch manager and/or operations manager.
  • Coordinates special warehouse services projects for our customers and their needs. 
  • Participates in company and industry driver leadership training events.
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor or designate.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a two-year business/trade degree preferred or the equivalent in work experience. 
  • Prior supervisory experience with a minimum of three years of prior transportation, fleet management experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license to operate company vehicles required.
  • Valid or previously valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
  • Industry certifications such as CDL training certificates, Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT), and Defensive Driving Training preferred.
  • Experience with fleet technologies including ELD/DVIR systems, event monitoring and recording systems, route optimization systems, and Fleet Management Systems (FMS) required.
  • Prior experience in warehouse management and forklift operation is preferred. 
  • Good knowledge of electrical products or systems preferred.
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English preferred. 
  • Prefer strong working knowledge of PC for Windows, Microsoft Office (Excel and Word), Internet, Email and SAP software. 
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of fleet and driver management.
  • Strong understanding of FMSCA and DOT regulations.
  • Understanding of commercial motor vehicle inspection and maintenance standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, reading, and customer service skills are preferred with the ability to effectively plan and organize. 
  • Ability to lead, coach, develop strong teams and attract top talent.
  • Excellent customer service skills include being competent, accurate, responsive and engaged.
  • Ability to collaborate and problem solve.
