Definition: Under the guidance of the EVS Supervisor, the Environmental Services Technician will be responsible for duties in both the Laundry and Housekeeping Departments, based on the needs of the departments.


Distinguishing Characteristics: This is an entry level position in Environmental Services. This position will have no subordinates and will report directly to the EVS Supervisor.


Essential Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned jobs/duties are not limited to the essential functions).

  1. Learns and follows cleaning and safety procedures according to policy, procedure, and safety guidelines, including the proper use of chemicals, knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), infection control, and emergency protocols.
  2. Collects dirty and distributes clean linen to ensure hospital operations run smoothly in accordance with policy and procedure.
  3. Creates and properly affixes identification labels for patient/resident clothes to ensure correct delivery to the appropriate patient/resident.
  4. Identifies equipment and supply needs in accordance with established par levels prior to pick up and delivery to ensure adequate resources are available in performing quality health care service and to meet with budgetary compliance.
  5. Performs or schedules routine cleaning and maintenance of laundry equipment to ensure continuous operation.
  6. Completes check off sheets, logs, and timecards accurately to uphold the integrity of the individual and the department.
  7. Collects trash, biohazard waste, and soiled linens and receives, stocks, and distributes cleaning supplies to ensure hospital operations run smoothly.
  8. Receives, stores, and dispenses supplies to ensure departments receive materials with minimal interruption to hospital operations.
  9. Participates in quality assurance and process improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety.


Qualifications for Employment:

Qualifications for employment include the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a job, which are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.

Knowledge of:

  • Basics of reading safety data sheets (SDS), infection control procedures, and other emergency protocols.
  • Basic cleaning procedures, including, but not limited to, dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming.
  • Proper body mechanics while lifting trash, laundry, and linens.


Skill to:

  • Create and adhere labels to patient/resident clothing while maintaining patient/resident dignity.
  • Meet the needs of patients/residents relating to room, laundry, and linen cleanliness, while adhering to facility policy and procedure and regulatory compliance measures.

Ability to:

  • Maintain composure while dealing with bodily fluids, which may include blood, urine, feces, pus, etc.
  • Accurately deliver patient/resident property in timely fashion.
  • Quickly and accurately identify supply levels and respond appropriately to low levels of a necessary supply.
  • Ability to understand, read, and communicate in English at a level sufficient to safely perform essential job functions, including following written safety procedures and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), completing logs and documentation, labeling patient/resident items accurately, and communicating with staff regarding cleaning, infection control, and safety protocols.

Working Conditions: Work is performed under the following conditions:


This position will be an indoor and outdoor position that may expose the incumbent to weather extremes, including freezing and extremely hot temperatures while working outdoors. Position routinely encounters situations with potentially infectious material; additionally, position routinely experiences potential exposure to blood and body fluids. Usage of protective equipment and safety precautions for brief or extended periods of time may be required. Work schedule may include rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Ability to lift, move, and transfer equipment up to 50 pounds regularly. Physical stamina to perform tasks that involve standing, walking, bending, and reaching for extended periods, both indoors and outdoors. Capacity to prioritize tasks, multitask, and maintain safety protocol.
