Job description

Are you currently looking for an entry level position in a highly regarded department? Do you have the desire to gain insight knowledge and experience that may be applied in future promotional opportunities? If so, then this might be the position for you. The Department of Justice Legal Support Operations is currently seeking well rounded, friendly individuals to fill our Office Technician (Typing) position.
Under the general supervision of the Legal Support Supervisor for the Docketing Unit, the Docketing Technician will perform duties of a complex and responsible nature, exercise a high degree of initiative and independence in performing assigned tasks including, but not limited to; directly and independently reviewing 500 different types of daily incoming legal documents. The scope of the documents include the full range of plaintiff and defendant motions for appeal including writs, appeals, complaints, orders, answers, stays, etc. The Docketing Technician must assess the urgency of each document and ensure it is referred to the assigned deputy for action, as well as identify situations where deadlines established by the various courts may not be met.
This job includes independently evaluating the documents, determining appropriate actions and accurately coding and entering the data in ProLaw. Entry of data requires a thorough understanding of the processing requirements of ProLaw. In addition, detailed knowledge of the judiciary process and general knowledge of legal terminology is required. Regular communication with legal staff, and other departmental staff, court clerks, and opposing counsel to exchange and obtain information regarding docketing of cases. Lifting boxes up to 40 lbs. may be required.
