Job description

Reporting Manager: General Superintendent

Job Location: Within and Throughout the State of New York

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $30.00 - $50.00 per hour dependent upon New York State Prevailing Wage Rates

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Ground Crew / Laborer role will be assigned to our New York operation and it is responsible for providing physical labor on construction sites by assisting the Foreman on monitoring the ground functions of Company equipment. This position may also be responsible for water support and driving/ operating water trucks. Laborers are required to assist co-workers in a safe and appropriate manner.

It's not uncommon for our Ground Crew / Laborer roles to grow into an Operator role within our organization, so this is a great entry level skilled labor job opportunity.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Controls and actively participates in labor related activities on job sites during various stages of the project to ensure the accurate completion of the project.
  • While on a job site, responsible for appropriately marking manholes and water valves with spray paint to be avoided by the milling machine.
  • While with a milling machine on job sites, responsible for:
    1. actively communicating with the employee operating the machine;
    2. ensuring the milling machine is clear of any debris or objects it could potentially hit, including remove millings that could hinder the operation of the machine;
    3. assisting with changing carbide teeth in milling machine drum;
    4. greasing the machine; and
    5. maintaining the correct cutting depth.
  • While with a clean-up crew on job sites, responsible for assisting equipment operators to ensure loose particles are removed from the milled and roadway surfaces using shovels, brooms or other methods to achieve a cleaned surface.
  • Other duties include helping with traffic control set-up and taking down and tending a slow/stop sign to maintain safe public and worker travel through the work zone, loading and unloading equipment (including equipment from trucks), shovels dirt, gravel, and other materials.
  • Performs work with all hand tools including but not limited to pneumatic or traditional hammers, drills, impact guns and grease guns.
  • May operate a variety of heavy mechanical equipment that requires technical expertise or specialized training. Heavy mechanical equipment to include but not limited to water trucks, milling machines, backhoes, skid steers, and broom tractors in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Assists and/or performs daily equipment inspections and safety checks to identify hazards, defects, necessary adjustments and repairs.
  • Assists and/or performs routine maintenance, including changing cutting edges, changing oil in milling machine, changing broom cores, etc.).
  • Advises the Foreman of any requirements for maintenance or repairs.
  • Ensure Company machines, equipment, vehicles, and tools and washed, cleaned and securely stored.
  • Responsible for informing management of any safety concerns; adheres to safety and work performance standards to comply with OSHA, company and other agency regulations.
  • Maintains ability to travel up to 100% of time to various job sites, possibly including extended overnight stays.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Complete special projects as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • General understanding of heavy equipment operating companies and related safety protocols.
  • Valid driver license strongly preferred; CDL (Class A, B or C) preferred; acceptable motor vehicle record preferred.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods, in all types of weather and under various working conditions.
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors and will be on their feet all day while either walking or standing.
  • Reliable work ethic; regular attendance is required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds with co-workers, vendors, and subcontractors at all levels.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must tolerate working environment with outside temperatures that include excessive heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
  • Must be able to work outside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts.
  • Must be able to push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds to an overhead position.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and twist body.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to use both hands and demonstrate good hand-eye coordination.
  • Tolerance to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Potentially exposed to contaminants, such as dust or fumes from exhaust; frequent exposure to hazardous equipment.
  • Occasionally work in very bright or very dim lighting conditions.
  • Are sometimes exposed to hazardous situations that produce cuts or minor burns.
  • Occasionally are exposed to whole body vibration, such as when using a jackhammer.
  • May need to work in tight/confined spaces or work areas.
  • Must be able to regularly wear personal protective equipment, including hard hats, safety goggles, safety vests and/or ear plugs.
