Job description

Staring hourly rate: $36.77 progresses in accordance with the union contract.

Union Represented position which includes a six (6) month probationary period

Initial basic schooltraining will be based out of Berlin CT for approximatelyfive-weeks. Successful completion of this five-week school is required to advance to the field training portion of the program. This includes successfully passing a written and hands-on pole climbing assessment and performing a successful timed pole top rescue.

The Line Helper is an entry-level position where an individual will learn to perform work involved in the construction, operation, and maintenance of the overhead electric system. He or she will be acquiring the necessary knowledge and experience required to progress through the established Line Helper steps. Individuals must be able to perform work assignments at the apprentice line worker level including distribution and/or transmission work; work emergency and overtime when the need exists; candidate must demonstrate safe working practices; have the mechanical ability to use hand/power tools, and equipment pertinent to line construction and maintenance; and can climb and work on poles, ladders, and other elevated structures.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or the equivalent is required and additional electrical technical training is preferred.
  • Candidates must successfully pass the EEI Construction and Skilled Trades Test (CAST) Test, an agility assessment, and a knowledge -based exam. An interview will also be held.
  • The candidate will be required to have the ability to work extended hours, weekends, emergency responses and on call assignments.
  • The successful candidate must live within 30 minutes of the reporting location.

Experience: Two (2) years of electrical experience, physical work experience, and/or related mechanical experience. Candidates who have graduated from a line school training program or an Eversource Lineworker program could be considered with less than two (2) years of work experience. Prior pole and climbing experience is preferred. Must have a work history that demonstrates safe work habits.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license is required with a clean driving record. It is preferred that individuals hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) but are required to have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Working Conditions:
Will be required to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all seasons and at times for extended periods.

Have the ability to:

  • stand a minimum of five to six hours on the ground - may be in a bucket on a line truck or at the top of a distribution pole
  • sit for a minimum of two to three hours - may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault
  • move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
  • lift up and push/pull up to 75 pounds
  • climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths
  • frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat
  • differentiate between colors (color vision).
  • Have Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to gain knowledge of:

  • the methods, materials, and tools in line construction and maintenance work
  • the principles of electric theory as applied to electrical circuits and wire systems
  • the occupational hazards of the trade and of adequate and necessary safety precautions.
  • light construction and maintenance equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, along with the ability to read and interpret data, information, and documents.
Ability to analyze and solve problems and to observe and interpret situations.
Ability to learn and apply new information or new skills, while working under deadlines with constant interruptions
