General Function
The Entry Level Swim Instructor shadows and assists with instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.
Education/Experience/Training/Certifications
  • At a minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, and Emergency Oxygen fromthe Red Cross
  • Obtains YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent at the first certification course offered by the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit after hire.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Shadows and prepares swimming lessons according to the YMCA guidelines
  • Builds authentic relationships with students and parents
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules as appropriate
  • Maintains records as required and attends staff meetings and trainings
  • Performs other assigned duties as directed by the supervisor

Abilities & Skills
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment and to lift a small to average-sized child.
