Job description

POSITION/JOB SUMMARY:

  • The Nursing Assistant Trainee (NAT) is an entry-level healthcare position designed to support individuals pursuing Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification through the JMHS Nursing Assistant Pathway Program.
  • The NAT is hired as a JMHS employee and provides non-licensed, non-clinical support to residents, patients, and the healthcare team while enrolled in an approved CNA training program. Upon successful completion of CNA certification and competency validation, the NAT transitions into a CNA position at JMHS.

While working through the Nursing Assistant Pathway Program employees will be assigned Casual/PRN status. Casual shifts as a Nursing Assistant Trainee will be mutually agreed upon, depending on both the employee's availability and the employer's need.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(Pre-Certification – Within Scope of Practice)

  • Resident/Patient Support
  • Assist with comfort rounds and respond to call lights by notifying licensed staff
  • Provide companionship and social interaction
  • Assist with meal setup and hydration rounds
  • Transport residents/patients as directed
  • Make beds and tidy resident/patient rooms
  • Replenish supplies and maintain a clean environment
  • Support infection prevention practices under supervision
  • Departmental Support (May Include Activities or Dietary)
  • Assist with activity programming and group events
  • Provide 1:1 resident engagement
  • Assist with meal tray preparation and delivery
  • Escort residents to meals and activities
  • Work under direct supervision of licensed nursing staff
  • Participate in orientation, training, and shadow experiences
  • Attend required meetings and in-services
  • Maintain professionalism and positive communication with residents, families, and team members
  • Help others succeed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

STANDARD REQUIREMENTS

  • Supports Mission, Vision and Values at Johnson Memorial Health Services.
  • Knowledgeable of resident rights and ensures an atmosphere which allows for the privacy, dignity, and the well-being of all residents in a safe, secure environment.
  • Supports, cooperates with, and implements specific procedures and programs for:
    • Safety, including universal precautions and safe work practices, established fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management, and security, report and/or correct unsafe working conditions, equipment repair and maintenance needs.
    • Confidentiality of all data, including patient, resident, employee, and operations data.
    • Quality assurance and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
    • Compliance with current law and policy to provide a work environment free from any sort of harassment and all illegal and discriminatory behavior.
  • Supports and participates in common teamwork:
    • Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction including appropriate judgment.
    • Use tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations.
    • Follow up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers, or residents regarding reported complaints, problems, and/or concerns.
    • Promotes positive public relations with residents, family members and guests.
    • Completes requirements for in-service and annual training, acceptable attendance, uniform dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for enrollment in an approved CNA training program
  • Must successfully complete CNA training within designated timeframe
  • Must pass state competency exam and background study requirements

TRANSITION TO CNA ROLE

  • Upon successful certification and competency validation, the Nursing Assistant Trainee will transition to an open Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) position with updated job responsibilities and compensation.
