PIH Health developed a Work Embedded Program in partnership with Cerritos College Nursing Program to train a group of PIH Health employees to become Registered Nurses (RN). Part of this partnership is for PIH Health to employ a Nursing Instructor to work full-time at Cerritos College during the academic year.   

The Nursing Instructor embraces the mission and philosophy of PIH Health and Cerritos College while possessing the knowledge, skills, and ability to work closely with other faculty, the college campus community, and affiliating health agencies to provide the best educational experience for the student body. In this position, the teaching assignment will include didactic and clinical instruction in the Associate Degree Nursing program, including instruction in the Simulation Skills Lab and in a variety of medical- surgical, geriatric, obstetric, pediatric, psychiatric/mental health, and community-based settings. The candidate must be able to teach a variety of courses across the nursing curriculum depending on their clinical background, experience, and area of expertise, and may need to demonstrate flexibility with courses during the day, in the evenings, and/or on weekends. This position must be comfortable teaching in person, online, and in a hybrid format. Strong classroom and clinical teaching skills are a must. The position will be working on teaching teams and must demonstrate strong teamwork, excellent communication patterns, accountability, flexibility, initiative, and emotional intelligence. Responsibilities will include instruction, development of curriculum, advising students, mentoring, participation in department and campus committees, meeting regularly with faculty and division members, working on faculty development, and assisting in accreditation self-study reviews. 

The Nursing Instructor responsibilities at Cerritos College are during the academic year (10 months, mid-August, to mid-May). This position will work at PIH Health when classes are not in session (2 months). Job duties at PIH Health during this time depend on the organization’s needs and employee’s qualifications.

The Cerritos College Associate Degree Nursing Program is housed in the Health Occupations Division of Cerritos College, a single college district in the California Community College system. The four-semester program offers didactic and clinical coursework which leads to an Associate Degree in Nursing and qualifies the graduate for the California state board licensing exam (NCLEX-RN). The program has full state accreditation through the Board of Registered Nursing and has had for over 60 years. The program also holds full national accreditation with Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The program meets or exceeds program goals/outcomes for completion rates, licensing rates, and employment rates. Through a competitive application process, the program admits 80 students a year, for a total of 160 students in the program at any given time. The Cerritos College program mission and philosophy is to prepare entry-level practicing nurses who can meet the needs of a diverse population in an ever-changing health care environment. Nursing is defined as a science, discipline, and health care practice that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients having health problems within the domain of nursing. Required:

  • Active California Registered Nursing License
  • Master’s degree in nursing
  • Minimum of two years of registered nursing experience in either direct patient care and/or registered nursing level teaching
  • Registered nurse patient care and teaching experience must have been within the past five years
  • Minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing.
    • Completion of at least (1) year experience teaching nursing R/T RN coursework OR completion of post-baccalaureate coursework which includes practice in teaching registered nurses (Submit official coursework with descriptions)
    • CA Driver License
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate for Healthcare Provider
    • Current Immunizations: Physical Exam, TB Test (or CXR), Titers for Varicella/MMR/HepB, Tdap, Influenza, COVID (or verification of exemption)
    • At least (1) year of clinical experience in Medical Surgical Nursing
    • At least (1) year of clinical experience in a second specialty area (Psych, OB, PEDs, ICU)
    • More than 2 years of teaching experience in didactic and clinical at the Associate or Baccalaureate level of nurse training 

Preferred:

  • Experience in Simulation in Skills Lab setting
  • Online Teaching Certification completed
