BI Data Developer

Imagine designing, developing, and maintaining state-wide data solutions supporting over one million K-12 students, plus hundreds of thousands of parents, teachers, and school staff in Arizona. The Arizona Department of Education is creating award-winning solutions using leading-edge technologies. This position will allow the ideal candidate to positively impact the projects and services that improve educational outcomes in our state.

Position Summary

This BI Data Developer position will be primarily responsible for development, enhancement, troubleshooting, and maintenance of data-focused software solutions using Power BI, T-SQL, SSIS, and other data management and visualization tools as needed to support various ADE business processes, data analysis, and reporting requirements. The successful developer will be solution-oriented, adapt to changing environments, and able to work with minimal defined requirements. Preferred candidates will be investigative, detail-oriented problem solvers who understand the power of data and the criticality of its quality.

Responsibilities
  • Develop interactive data visualizations, analytics, dashboards, and reporting solutions using Power BI and associated data management and BI tools
  • Develop T-SQL for creation and maintenance of database objects and data manipulation functionality (tables, views, functions, stored procedures, scripts, etc.)
  • Develop ETL solutions using SQL Server Integration services (SSIS) for preparation and maintenance of data sets as needed for reporting and data visualization functions
  • Participate in all phases of the BI and data solutions development and maintenance lifecycle
  • Participate in collaborative design and definition sessions, engaging with business analysts and stakeholders to understand requirements and contribute to functional specifications
  • Perform impact analysis on change requests, providing estimates for development efforts
  • Assist in documenting technical specifications from business requirements and maintaining system design and reference documentation
  • Work with the lead Data Architect on implementation of data architecture principles to align and conform with business capabilities
  • Engage with the core data team in the design of efficient processes to load and manage data, data quality assessment to ensure that the quality of the source data will meet the information requirements, and development of business rules, data mappings, and transformation rules
  • Assist in supporting multiple SQL Server data repositories, which may include documenting database architecture, analyzing datasets to identify missing, incomplete, or invalid information, and maintaining formal descriptions of data and data structures
  • Support production systems, participating in defect analysis and resolution
  • Work closely/collaboratively with cross-functional teams (Project Management, Business Analysis and Stakeholders, Quality Assurance, Operations, etc.)
  • Participate in various Agile/Scrum activities, such as backlog grooming, sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and sprint retrospectives
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent
Skills Required

• Demonstrated experience and capability developing in Power BI and other BI and Data Visualization tools

• SQL Server development using T-SQL and SSIS, plus intermediate- to advanced-level relational database modeling and design

• Strong understanding of query optimization, SQL Indexing, and other database performance tuning concepts and techniques

• Ability to recognize and apply data systems development patterns and best practices

• Ability to proactively solve complex problems, applying creative solutions to ensure business needs are most effectively met

• Ability to excel in a collaborative and distributed team environment

• Ability to effectively collaborate with both technical and business experts alike

• Ability to effectively communicate with various levels of employees ranging from entry level to senior leadership

• Ability to respectfully question ideas and share a point of view with others in support of the business requirements and needs

• Ability to work with a minimal amount of direction while being proactive in keeping management and coworkers informed of project related issues

• Familiarity with the Ed-Fi, CEDS, and/or SIF data standards and specifications

Education Required

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field of study, or equivalent professional experience.
