What does an intermediate financial analyst do?

An Intermediate Financial Analyst typically analyzes financial data, prepares reports, and helps support business decisions by providing insights on financial performance. They often work with budgets, forecasts, and financial models, collaborating with other departments to interpret data and identify trends. These analysts may also assist in evaluating investment opportunities, monitoring expenses, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Their role bridges the gap between entry-level analysts and senior financial professionals, requiring a solid understanding of financial principles and strong analytical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate financial analyst?

To thrive as an Intermediate Financial Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and typically a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Proficiency in financial modeling, Microsoft Excel, and familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, as well as certifications such as CFA or CPA, are often required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure accurate financial analysis, informed decision-making, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by intermediate financial analysts when transitioning from entry-level positions?

Intermediate Financial Analysts often encounter challenges such as taking on more complex financial modeling tasks, interpreting large data sets, and presenting findings to leadership. They are expected to move beyond basic reporting and contribute more strategically to budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Additionally, intermediates may begin mentoring junior analysts and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, which requires strong communication and project management skills.

Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but the Intermediate Financial Analyst is positioned as a step above entry-level positions, with greater involvement in financial planning and analysis.

Can I get an intermediate financial analyst job with no experience?

While some entry-level financial analyst positions may accept candidates with little or no experience, an intermediate financial analyst role typically requires prior experience in financial analysis, accounting, or related fields. Developing skills in Excel, financial modeling, and gaining relevant certifications like CFA can improve chances, but most employers expect some professional background for this level.

Job description

Title: Financial Analyst

Location: Scottsdale, AZ

Compensation: $110-135k

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for a Financial Analyst who can act as a fractional CFO for a book of 10 to 15 clients. This is not a role where you build a model and hand it off. You'll sit with business owners, walk them through their numbers, and help them actually understand what those numbers mean for the decisions in front of them.

The right person for this role:

  • Puts the client's business ahead of their own ego. You ask good questions, take feedback well, and give credit where it's due. You're the kind of person people trust with their numbers.

  • Takes real ownership of every client relationship. You don't wait to be asked. You dig into the data, chase down what doesn't add up, and push for financial clarity because guesswork bothers you.

  • Is genuinely personable and client facing. You can take a complex financial model and explain it in plain English to a business owner who's never seen a balance sheet before. High emotional intelligence and the ability to simplify without dumbing down are non negotiable.

What You'll Own

  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor for a book of 10 to 15 clients, building financial forecasts that cover gross margins, marketing spend, personnel costs, and owner draws

  • Develop tailored financial plans that connect a client's short term needs to their long term goals

  • Build and maintain financial models, budgets, and reporting packages, and analyze income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements to spot opportunities and risks

  • Manage the quarterly and annual budgeting and revenue forecasting process, comparing actual performance to budget for each client

  • Translate industry best practices into a plain language plan for each client, and tailor future conversations to close the gaps they're facing

  • Advise clients on expense management, people costs, marketing spend, and owner draws using real industry benchmarks

  • Work with each client to build out Corporate, Department, and Employee KPIs, and advise on compensation plans that fit their team

  • Prepare and deliver monthly financial reporting packages and forecasts, and set short and long term financial goals alongside each client

  • Keep clear, accurate records of every client conversation and a running history of each client's progress

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience

  • 5+ years of experience in finance or accounting, ideally in a consulting or advisory capacity

  • Strong grasp of financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting, plus a solid understanding of the month end close cycle

  • Comfort with cash to accrual concepts and the tradeoffs between them

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills

  • Proven ability to take complex financial concepts and make them make sense to a small business owner

  • A genuine desire to keep improving: coachable, curious, and always looking to get better

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage (employee + dependents)

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Paid parental leave

  • Vacation and sick time that increases with tenure

  • Fully paid gym membership

  • Pet insurance

  • Employee Assistance Program

  • Professional development reimbursement for outside courses and certifications

  • Internal mentorship program and extensive internal education resources

  • Uncapped incentive eligibility

Why This Role

You'll join a high performing team that lives accountability, discipline, and transparency. You'll work directly with small business owners who are scaling their companies, and every model you build and every call you lead has a direct line to their success. Compensation is competitive, and there's real upside for people who perform.
