Job description

Summary/Objective
The Associate Engineer supports the design, modification, and commissioning of power system protection and automation schemes. This entry-level role works closely with senior engineering staff to learn design standards, tools, and processes while contributing to project deliverables under close supervision.
Essential Functions
  • Assist in developing substation protection schemes and specifying relays for redundant protection systems.
  • Prepare basic engineering drawings, sketches, and documentation under guidance.
  • Assist in calculating and programming substation protective relay set points.
  • Support commissioning activities by providing field assistance and documentation.
  • Learn and apply industry standards and internal design procedures.
  • Maintain organized project files and records.
  • Collaborate with project teams, contractors, and utility personnel to support project execution.
  • Participate in training and mentorship programs to develop technical skills.
  • All other duties assigned

Required Education and Experience:
Must-have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% for field commissioning near energized equipment.
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience in electric utility or power systems.

Nice-to-have:
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT).
  • Internship or prior related experience.
  • CAD experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic understanding of electrical theory, power systems, and protective relaying.
  • Proficiency in CAD software preferred.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions and work under supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management.

Compensation:
This is a full-time, salaried position with an annual base salary range of $65,000 - $85,000, depending on experience and qualifications. The Associate Engineer is eligible for REI's comprehensive benefits package.
