Assistant Project Manager Heavy Civil (Road & Bridge)
Position Overview
We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager to support delivery of heavy civil infrastructure projects with a focus on road and bridge construction. The Assistant Project Manager will work closely with the Project Manager and field teams to coordinate schedules, manage subcontractors and suppliers, monitor budget and progress, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. This role requires strong communication, organizational skills, and hands-on construction experience to help drive projects to completion on time and on budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Project Manager in planning, executing, and closing heavy civil projects, including roads, bridges, drainage, and related infrastructure.
- Coordinate day-to-day site activities between superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, and design/engineering teams to maintain schedule and resolve issues.
- Monitor project schedule and cost performance; prepare progress reports, change order documentation, and forecast updates for management review.
- Support contract administration tasks including subcontractor agreements, purchase orders, RFIs, submittals, and pay applications.
- Conduct regular site visits to verify work quality, compliance with specifications, and adherence to safety and environmental requirements.
- Participate in project meetings, prepare meeting minutes, and follow up on action items to ensure timely resolution.
- Assist with developing and maintaining project risk registers, mitigation plans, and quality control processes.
- Help coordinate permitting, inspections, and utility/agency interfaces as required for project progression.
- Support project closeout activities including punch lists, as-built documentation, and final invoicing.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in heavy civil construction or infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, or utilities); experience in project management or engineering support roles preferred.
- Working knowledge of construction means and methods for earthwork, paving, structure construction, drainage, and traffic control.
- Familiarity with contract administration, change management, estimating, and construction scheduling (MS Project or Primavera a plus).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience coordinating with owners, engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Proven problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks in fast-paced field environments.
- Working knowledge of construction safety standards and regulatory compliance (OSHA, local DOT standards).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and willingness to learn industry software (project management and document control platforms).
- Valid drivers license and willingness to travel to job sites as needed.
