Job Summary:
The Ophthalmic Assistant is the entry-level position of the Ophthalmic Professionals. Aids the ophthalmologist by
obtaining medical information, performing preliminary eye function exams and explaining to patients about medication
and/or procedures.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Performing the following functions-visual acuity, tests such as visual fields, keratometry, ocular mobility,
refraction, imaging, administering eye drops, assisting with corrective lenses and other supplemental
testing.
Under the supervision of the ophthalmologist administer medications, processing microbiological
specimens, measurement of intraocular pressure, and performing amblyopia treatment. Assesses, performs
specialized procedures, patient education, supporting and communicating with medical staff, and recording
results of routine ophthalmic examination procedures on patients.
Assisting with ophthalmic surgery procedures. Primary responsibilities include assessment, the performance
of specialized procedures, patient education, supporting and communicating with medical staff, and
recording results of routine ophthalmic examination procedures on patients.
Performing imaging. Performs simple maintenance on equipment and reports malfunctions. Practices
under the directions of higher-level personnel until certified.
Performs other duties as assigned
Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
  • High School Diploma General

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor

Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
CMA, CNA, COA preferred. Upon Hire Preferred
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum 2 years' experience in medical field. Preferred
