What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level 3D Product Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level 3D Product Modeler, you need foundational skills in 3D modeling, attention to detail, and a relevant degree or coursework in design, animation, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max is typically required, and having a portfolio of work can be beneficial. Strong communication, creativity, and the ability to take feedback help individuals stand out in this collaborative environment. These skills and qualities are important to ensure accurate, creative, and production-ready 3D assets that meet project requirements and client expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level 3D product modelers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level 3D product modelers often face challenges such as adapting to different software platforms, understanding detailed client specifications, and working within tight deadlines. To overcome these, it's important to develop strong communication skills to clarify project requirements, seek feedback regularly from more experienced team members, and dedicate time to learning the nuances of industry-standard tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya. Participating in team meetings and collaborating closely with designers, engineers, and project managers can also help broaden your understanding and improve your workflow.

What is entry level 3D product modeling?

Entry level 3D product modeling refers to the process of creating three-dimensional digital representations of objects or products, typically for use in industries like manufacturing, gaming, e-commerce, or animation. At the entry level, professionals use specialized software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max to design basic models based on specifications or reference images. These models help visualize products before they are physically produced or used in virtual environments. Entry-level roles focus on learning the fundamentals, refining technical skills, and building a portfolio of 3D models.

What is the difference between Entry Level 3D Product Modeling vs Entry Level 3D Character Modeling?

AspectEntry Level 3D Product ModelingEntry Level 3D Character Modeling
Required SkillsBasic 3D modeling, CAD software, attention to detailBasic 3D modeling, anatomy understanding, creativity
Work EnvironmentProduct design firms, manufacturing, industrial designAnimation studios, gaming, entertainment
Common ToolsSolidWorks, Fusion 360, BlenderMaya, ZBrush, Blender
Industry UsageProduct development, prototyping, manufacturingVideo games, movies, character design

Entry Level 3D Product Modeling focuses on creating accurate models for products and prototypes, often requiring CAD skills. Entry Level 3D Character Modeling emphasizes designing characters for entertainment, requiring creativity and anatomy knowledge. Both roles share basic 3D skills but serve different industries and purposes.

Job description

Your Impact at LILA
Lila Sciences is building the future of autonomous science, and our laboratory facilities are at the center of that work. The 3D Modeler will own the SketchUp models that represent these spaces, from new lab buildouts to existing facility documentation. The models drive design reviews, spatial planning decisions, and workcell layout work across the Autonomous Science Platform.
Working on the Automated Systems Engineering team, the 3D Modeler will translate facility design intent, equipment footprints, and operational constraints into accurate, up-to-date SketchUp models. The role partners closely with engineers, architects, and operations leads to keep models current as designs evolve and as-built conditions change.
This is a part-time contract role based out of the Alewife office in Cambridge, with on-site presence required during ramp-up and hybrid flexibility over time.
What You'll Be Building
  • Build and maintain SketchUp models for new lab buildouts and existing facility as-builts.
  • Translate architectural drawings, equipment specs, and field measurements into accurate 3D geometry.
  • Update models as designs evolve, capturing revisions to layouts, equipment, and workcells.
  • Produce model views, renderings, and exports that support design reviews and stakeholder alignment.
  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, and operations leads to validate model accuracy against real-world conditions.
  • Organize model files, components, and version history so the team can navigate and reuse assets.

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Demonstrated experience producing production-quality 3D models in SketchUp.
  • Proficiency interpreting architectural drawings, mechanical layouts, and field measurements.
  • Comfort working from incomplete information and validating assumptions with stakeholders.
  • Strong file organization habits across components, layers, scenes, and version history.
  • Ability to work on-site at the Alewife office during ramp-up, with hybrid flexibility longer term.
  • Clear written and verbal communication for working across engineering, architecture, and operations.

Bonus Points For
  • Experience modeling laboratory, cleanroom, or industrial facility environments.
  • Familiarity with lab equipment, robotics workcells, or automated systems layouts.
  • Working knowledge of complementary tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, V-Ray, LayOut).
  • Exposure to facility design or buildout processes from concept through occupancy.
