Is Java outdated in 2026?

Java remains a widely used programming language in 2026, especially for enterprise applications, Android development, and backend systems. As an entry Java developer, proficiency in Java and related frameworks like Spring continue to be valuable skills, with ongoing updates ensuring its relevance in the software industry.

Is AI replacing Java developers?

AI is automating certain coding tasks and improving software development processes, but Java developers are still essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining complex applications. AI tools can assist developers, but they do not replace the need for human expertise, problem-solving skills, and understanding of business requirements in Java development.

Is Java developer still in demand?

What are Entry Java Developers?

Entry Java Developers are software professionals who are new to the Java programming language and software development industry. They typically work on basic coding tasks, bug fixes, and assist in the development of applications under the supervision of senior developers. These roles are ideal for recent graduates or those transitioning into software development, as they provide opportunities to learn industry best practices and gain hands-on experience. Entry Java Developers are expected to have a fundamental understanding of Java, object-oriented programming, and basic software development tools.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level Java developers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level Java developers often encounter challenges such as understanding legacy codebases, adapting to collaborative workflows like version control (e.g., Git), and balancing the learning of new frameworks with ongoing project tasks. To overcome these, it's helpful to proactively seek code reviews, communicate regularly with more experienced team members, and leverage internal documentation. Participating in team stand-ups and pair programming sessions can also accelerate learning and improve confidence in navigating real-world projects.

Which pays more, C++ or Java?

For entry Java developers, salary differences between C++ and Java roles are often minimal and depend on industry, location, and experience. Generally, C++ developers may earn slightly higher salaries due to the complexity of the language and its use in specialized fields like systems programming, but Java developers are also well-compensated, especially with skills in frameworks and cloud environments. Salary variations are influenced more by skills, certifications, and job market demand than by the programming language alone.

Senior Vice President, Forward Deployed Engineer - BNY

BNY

Manhattan, NY

$115K - $158K/yr

Full-time

Posted 14 days ago

Job description

At BNY, our culture allows us to run our company better and enables employees’ growth and success. As a leading global financial services company at the heart of the global financial system, we influence nearly 20% of the world’s investible assets. Every day, our teams harness cutting-edge AI and breakthrough technologies to collaborate with clients, driving transformative solutions that redefine industries and uplift communities worldwide.

Recognized as a top destination for innovators, BNY is where bold ideas meet advanced technology and exceptional talent. Together, we power the future of finance – and this is what #LifeAtBNY is all about. Join us and be part of something extraordinary.

We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Forward Deployed Engineer to join our Engineering Hub Team. This role is located in New York City.

In this role, you‘ll make an impact in the following ways:

  • Embed with business and platform stakeholders to scope and execute time-boxed FDE engagements with clear entry and exit criteria; translate defined opportunities into production-ready delivery plans.
  • Design, build, and harden AI-first solutions across data, APIs, services, and workflow integrations, moving confidently from prototype to secure, scalable production deployment.
  • Default to reuse-first delivery: extend existing platforms, templates, and modules rather than building avoidable one-offs; contribute reusable code and patterns back to shared repositories.
  • Execute discovery with operating teams and sponsors to clarify constraints, validate feasibility, and rapidly prototype where useful before hardening into production.
  • Surface patterns and learnings from engagements that can be standardized and promoted into shared platform capabilities.
  • Apply secure-by-default practices consistently; incorporate observability, testability, and operational readiness into every solution delivered.
  • Prepare clear handoff packages and transition plans so owning teams can sustain solutions independently after forward deployment ends.
  • Operate within the FDE playbook and contribute feedback to refine standards, handoff criteria, and working norms based on field experience.
  • Coordinate with control, architecture, security, and compliance stakeholders to keep solutions production-appropriate and governance-compliant.
  • Program well-designed, testable, efficient code; actively participate in code reviews and maintain software functionality while managing technical debt.
  • Apply security and privacy principles throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Mentor junior engineers; engage in active learning, complete mandatory training, and stay abreast of emerging technologies.

To be successful in this role, we‘re seeking the following:

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor‘s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • 10–14 years of hands-on software development experience, including direct delivery of production systems; experience in the securities or financial services industry is a plus.
  • Strong foundational understanding of modern AI and agentic application patterns, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, and agent-based system design.
  • Hands-on experience building backend services, APIs, and production systems.
  • Experience working across architecture, data, and platform concerns rather than only within a narrow layer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience delivering AI, data, or workflow-heavy solutions in regulated environments.
  • Strong systems-thinking and architecture judgment across services, data, and infrastructure.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and driving discovery with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience balancing speed with governance, security, and operational rigor.
  • Familiarity with reusable platform patterns, internal developer platforms, or productized infrastructure.
  • Experience with observability, evaluation, and day-2 production ownership practices.

Technical Skills

  • Strong software engineering skills in one or more of: Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python.
  • Experience with APIs, service integration, and secure-by-default engineering practices.
  • Ability to work across data, AI, workflow, and platform layers as needed.
  • Comfort using modern AI tooling pragmatically without confusing prototypes for production systems.
  • Familiarity with application frameworks and containerization.

Non-Technical Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Clear product and delivery judgment within a scoped engagement.
  • Ability to coordinate and execute across stakeholders without formal authority.
  • Practical tradeoff thinking under real constraints.
  • Bias toward action with disciplined follow-through.

People Leadership

  • Mentors junior engineers within engagements; contributes to team delivery quality and knowledge sharing.
