Position Summary

The Modern Languages Department at SUNY Cortland invitesapplications for a tenure-track position in TESOL at the assistantprofessor level, beginning in September 2027. The Department offersmajors and minors in Spanish and Teaching English as a SecondLanguage; degrees leading to New York State teaching certificationin Adolescence Education Spanish and K-12 Teaching English as aSecond Language; and an M.S. Ed. in Teaching English as a SecondLanguage, delivered fully online and asynchronously. In addition,the Modern Languages Department offers courses in ASL, French,Italian, Spanish, Teaching English as a Second Language, andEnglish for Academic Purposes to the campus community. The teachingload for a TESOL assistant professor is 3/3 (50% in person and 50%online, asynchronously).

Appointment Start Date: September 1, 2027

Starting Salary: $62,500 + depending on experience ( DOE)

Major Responsibilities
  • Teaching undergraduate and master’s courses such as secondlanguage methodology, second language writing, bilingual andmulticultural education, and educational technology, some in personand some online;
  • Maintaining an active scholarship/research agenda;
  • Advising students;
  • Providing scheduled office hours and support to studentsoutside of the classroom;
  • Engaging in service to the department, school, anduniversity.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to the Department Chair.
  • Works collaboratively with departmental faculty and staff.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in TESOL or a closely related field ( ABD will beconsidered with completion date prior to the start of theappointment).
  • Demonstrated experience in using technology in teaching andlearning.
  • Excellent English language proficiency.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant teaching experience at the college level, includingteaching online, asynchronous courses.
  • Experience teaching ESL / EFL and second language writing inK-12 or college settings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Graduate course work in linguistics and English grammar.
  • Background in literacy education.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.
