For over five decades, AFA has served the Austin community by promoting the study and appreciation of the French language and Francophone cultures. The organization offers a comprehensive catalog of French classes and a wide range of French-themed cultural events for students, members, and the broader public. AFA’s mission is guided by three core objectives—Communication, Culture, and Connection—fostering language learning, cultural engagement, and collaboration with other French and Francophone organizations. In this environment, instructors join a globally respected network dedicated to high-quality teaching and meaningful cultural exchange.

Role Description The French Instructor is a part-time, hybrid role based in Austin, TX, with a mix of on-site teaching and some work from home for virtual instruction. The instructor will design and deliver engaging French language classes for diverse learner levels, using pedagogically sound methods aligned with the Alliance Française standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing instructional materials, leading in-person and online classes, assessing learner progress, and providing constructive feedback. The role also involves collaborating with staff on curriculum development, supporting cultural programs and events, and contributing to community outreach related to Francophone cultures. The instructor is expected to maintain a positive, inclusive classroom environment and participate in periodic meetings, training sessions, and program evaluations.

Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in French (near-native or native level) and excellent command of English for clear, inclusive communication.
  • Experience in language teaching, curriculum development, and classroom management in K-12, adult education, or higher education settings.
  • Ability to design engaging, learner-centered lessons that integrate culture, conversation, grammar, and practical communication skills.
  • Comfort with hybrid instruction, including use of online platforms, digital resources, and basic educational technology tools.
  • Degree in French, Education, Linguistics, or a related field; teaching certification or recognized language teaching credential is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful learning environment.
  • Willingness to support and participate in French and Francophone cultural events, workshops, and outreach activities.
  • Organizational skills and reliability in lesson planning, scheduling, grading, and communication with learners and colleagues.
