English Conversation Partner information

What is an English conversation partner?

An English Conversation Partner helps non-native speakers improve their English through casual conversation. The focus is on fluency, pronunciation, and confidence rather than formal grammar lessons. Partners may work one-on-one or in small groups, either in person or online. No formal teaching experience is usually required, just patience and clear communication.

What does an English conversation partner do?

A typical day for an English Conversation Partner involves conducting one-on-one or small group sessions with learners, guiding them through casual conversation, pronunciation practice, and real-life speaking scenarios. You may work with students from diverse backgrounds, adapting your approach and topics to suit each individual's language goals and proficiency level. The role usually offers flexibility in scheduling and may be remote or in-person, depending on the employer. You'll also spend time preparing discussion materials and providing personalized feedback. Consistent communication and relationship-building are important parts of the job, making each day rewarding and dynamic.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an English conversation partner?

To thrive as an English Conversation Partner, you need strong English language proficiency, active listening skills, and the ability to facilitate engaging conversational practice, often supported by a bachelor's degree or TEFL/TESOL certification. Familiarity with virtual meeting platforms, language learning apps, and collaboration tools like Zoom or Google Meet is commonly required. Patience, cultural sensitivity, and effective interpersonal communication are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for building trust with learners, promoting language confidence, and ensuring a productive and supportive learning environment.

How to become an English Conversation Partner?

To become an English Conversation Partner, individuals typically need strong English language skills, often demonstrated through fluency or certification such as TEFL or TESOL. Relevant qualities include good communication, cultural awareness, and sometimes prior teaching or tutoring experience; some programs may require background checks or interviews. Volunteering or applying through language exchange platforms can also be pathways to start in this role.

Job description

Are you a person of compassion? An advocate for justice? Someone who stands up for the rights of the vulnerable and speaks out for the marginalized, the exploited and the forgotten?  Do you believe in our calling as Christians to welcome the least of these and love our neighbor?

If you answered 'yes', to any of the above, World Relief, and millions of people around the world need you.

At this pivotal moment in time, we are rapidly expanding and growing our team to meet the increasing needs of our world. We are looking for people who want to use their gifts and talents to make a real and tangible difference in our world and the lives of the suffering.

If you're looking for a purpose-driven career in which you can grow your talents, while also standing up for the rights of the vulnerable, we want you to join us today.

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:
World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization whose mission is to boldly engage the world's greatest crises in partnership with the church. The organization was founded in the aftermath of World War II to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of war-torn Europe. Since then, for 80 years, across 100 countries, World Relief has partnered with local churches and communities to build a world where families thrive and communities flourish.

Today, organizational programming focuses on humanitarian and disaster response, community strengthening and resilience, and refugee & immigrant services and advocacy.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Are you outgoing and like to connect with people from other languages and cultures? Do you want to use your English-speaking skills to build bridges of support for others as they integrate into their new community? World Relief seeks an English Conversation Partners (ECP) Intern to join our team! This position supports all World Relief Sacramento departments and our specific education outreach initiative by providing direct English conversation practice to immigrants seeking to increase their English communication skills. The intern will work with the World Relief Sacramento Education team and the regional volunteer coordinator to directly support volunteers involved in this program, as well as will have the opportunity to work directly with clients as an English Conversation Partner. This position requires English language fluency (not required for English to be their first language, but English proficiency is expected). The intern will support the client-volunteer matching process and will provide administrative assistance related to client enrollment and volunteer hours. This position requires a commitment to a set schedule and is ideal for interns pursuing studies in Education, TESOL, Social Work, or related fields. This position is for 10 hours per week with a hybrid schedule of 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home. The intern will gain cross cultural experience, become more familiar with the integration and learning needs of refugees, learn effective teaching techniques for second-language learners, and understand how English skills provide the basis for greater integration into life in the U.S. This is an unpaid internship; however, university credit may be available with prior approval.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Complete all required World Relief trainings (which includes Adult Education Basics and English Conversation Partners).
  • Learn and implement guidelines for English conversation sessions with English language learners.
  • Provide direct, in-person support to their conversation partners for conversation sessions (60-90 minutes per client per week).
  • Assist regional volunteer coordinator with client intake tracking, volunteer-client matching, scheduling coordination, and follow-up communication to support successful partnerships.
  • Serve as a point of contact for routine volunteer questions and help connect volunteers with appropriate staff support when needed.
  • Track participation, attendance, volunteer engagement, and program outcomes using established reporting systems.
  • Maintain and organize online educational resources (for clients and volunteers), attendance records, and program documentation.
  • Collect and organize participant and volunteer feedback to help evaluate and improve the English Conversation Partners program.
  • General office support duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Committed to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
  • Desire to serve vulnerable communities
  • Acknowledge World Relief's faith statement
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Strong digital literacy skills and familiarity with MS Suite
  • Must be highly organized and attentive to details
  • Commitment to a set schedule to be available to meet with clients at consistent times
  • Hold current valid US Driver's License; regular access to a personal vehicle required; must pass Motor Vehicle check
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Able to work effectively and sensitively with people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds; cross-cultural and/or language learning experience a plus but not required
  • Comfortable communicating cross-culturally with clients with limited English
  • Able to follow written and oral directions, learn, and retain new information quickly
  • Able to work independently and self-manage tasks and time
  • Outgoing, friendly, quickly build rapport, and put people at ease
$0 - $0 an hour
While some internships are unpaid, the program is competitive and you are encouraged to approach it in the same way you would a job. Applicants are required to submit a cover letter, resume, application, and to pass a Criminal Background Check. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Please note that an internship with World Relief does not guarantee a future job in the organization.
