Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with substation design expertise to join our Power Delivery team. This role is ideal for a driven leader who understands the technical and operational demands of utility substation projects and can confidently guide multidisciplinary engineering teams from project initiation through closeout.

You will lead small- to large-scale power delivery design projects, ensuring safety, quality, budget, and schedule objectives are consistently achieved while maintaining exceptional client satisfaction. You will play a central role in delivering successful outcomes across a portfolio of substation projects.

What We’re Looking for 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering License.
  • Minimum 8 years of design and/or project team leadership experience, including:
  • Demonstrated experience managing power utility substation design projects.
  • Strong experience in managing a team, providing encouragement and mentoring as needed to help the team increase their knowledge.
  • Strong working knowledge of power industry standards, practices, and processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects or a program portfolio simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and project scheduling software.
  • Working knowledge of corporate accounting practices and business operations.

What You’ll Do 

  • Project Leadership & Execution 
    • Lead cross-functional engineering teams in the execution of utility substation design projects.
    • Understand team skillsets, capabilities, and limitations and ensure resources are optimally placed on projects.
    • Demonstrate excellent communication and people skills.
    • Handle staff conflicts with a calm demeanor and by adhering to corporate procedures.
    • Possesses excellent recruiting skills.
    • Develop and manage key project planning documents, including:
      • Project Execution Plans
      • Project Initiation Documentation
      • Communication Plans
      • RFI logs
    • Drive accountability to scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
    • Ensure all Mesa business processes and procedures are followed.
  • Schedule & Budget Management 
    • Monitor and control project schedules and budgets.
    • Identify, document, and manage scope changes affecting cost and timeline.
    • Partner with project coordinators and controllers to forecast spending, accruals, and financial performance.
    • Support team in maintaining strong cost and schedule performance.
  • Risk & Issue Management 
    • Proactively identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies during proposal phase.
    • Track, assign, and resolve issues to minimize impact.
    • Maintain accurate and current project status reporting systems.
    • Have a quality mindset and encourage others within the department to do likewise.
    • Address department member concerns promptly and fairly.
  • Technical & Client Coordination
    • Support design teams in resolving technical challenges.
    • Mentor less experience team members.
    • Ensure staff are trained on customer procedures and processes.
    • Coordinate design and construction activities to ensure efficient information flow.
    • Communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders across multiple programs.
    • Participate in client meetings and substation site visits while adhering to all safety requirements.
