About the Position: The City of San Bernardino is seeking two (2) Engineering Technicians within the Public Works Department. The Engineering Technician performs a range of technical tasks related to processing engineering permits for the department.

This role involves reviewing applications and plans for accuracy and compliance, preparing cost estimates, and maintaining detailed records. As a journey-level professional in the engineering classification series, the Engineering Technician is responsible for a variety of permitting and technical activities associated with public works projects. The position requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

What You'll Be Doing Here Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and customer-focused professional with a strong understanding of engineering permitting processes and public works projects. They are able to interpret plans and regulations, communicate clearly with a variety of stakeholders, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Successful candidates will demonstrate sound judgment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Experience working with Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), NPDES Projects, land development, or municipal permitting processes is highly desirable. A commitment to public service and delivering accurate, timely support to internal teams and the community is essential. A Day in the Life A typical day as an Engineering Technician in the City of San Bernardino may include reviewing permit applications and engineering plans for completeness and compliance, calculating fees, and issuing permits.

You may assist customers at the public counter, respond to phone and email inquiries, and explain plan check corrections to engineers, contractors, and developers. Throughout the day, you will coordinate with inspectors, engineers, and other City departments to route plans and move projects forward. You may also research utility records, maps, and easements, maintain accurate digital records, and support both NPDES and Land Development projects.

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment: A valid State driver's license is required. Desirable Qualifications Public sector engineering or permitting experience related to Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), Land Development, NPDES compliance, or Right-of-Way permitting.

Familiarity with Best Management Practices (BMPs), SWPPP requirements, and erosion/sediment control measures Experience using electronic permitting and plan review systems. Strong organizational, customer service, and interdepartmental coordination skills Knowledge of: Engineering permit process and application administration. Modern techniques and equipment used in design and approval of various public works and land development projects.

WATCH Manual and MUTCD Legal guidelines for public works engineering. Federal, state and local laws, regulations and court decisions. Information technology and computer capabilities applicable to functional responsibilities.

Practices of sound business communication. Equipment maintenance practices and methods. Skill in: Reviewing and preparing engineering plans, drawings, specifications, and maps.

Processing forms, applications, and plans for the issuance of permits. Understanding, interpreting, explaining, and applying federal, state and local laws, standards and regulations applicable to areas of responsibility. Reviewing plans and specifications in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Exercising sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines. Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Preparing clear, concise, and comprehensive correspondence, reports, and other written materials.
