Looking to grow your career in public works and engineering? The City of San Bernardino is seeking two skilled Engineering Technicians to support NPDES and Land Development Divisions.
About the City: As a future member of our team, you'll be joining a city with deep roots, cultural diversity, and exciting momentum. Located in the heart of Southern California's Inland Empire, San Bernardino is the county seat and largest city in San Bernardino County, home to more than 222,000 residents. Its rich history - shaped by Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influences - continues to inspire the city's evolving identity.
San Bernardino offers access to major transit corridors, natural beauty, and a wide range of housing and lifestyle options. It's a place where public service careers are supported by a strong sense of community and purpose - and where motivated professionals can grow, contribute, and be part of something meaningful.
About the Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking two (2) Engineering Technicians within the Public Works Department. The Engineering Technician performs a range of technical tasks related to processing engineering permits for the department.
This role involves reviewing applications and plans for accuracy and compliance, preparing cost estimates, and maintaining detailed records.
As a journey-level professional in the engineering classification series, the Engineering Technician is responsible for a variety of permitting and technical activities associated with public works projects. The position requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
What You'll Be Doing Here
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and customer-focused professional with a strong understanding of engineering permitting processes and public works projects. They are able to interpret plans and regulations, communicate clearly with a variety of stakeholders, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Successful candidates will demonstrate sound judgment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Experience working with Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), NPDES Projects, land development, or municipal permitting processes is highly desirable. A commitment to public service and delivering accurate, timely support to internal teams and the community is essential.
A Day in the Life
A typical day as an Engineering Technician in the City of San Bernardino may include reviewing permit applications and engineering plans for completeness and compliance, calculating fees, and issuing permits. You may assist customers at the public counter, respond to phone and email inquiries, and explain plan check corrections to engineers, contractors, and developers.
Throughout the day, you will coordinate with inspectors, engineers, and other City departments to route plans and move projects forward. You may also research utility records, maps, and easements, maintain accurate digital records, and support both NPDES and Land Development projects.
