What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

Project Engineer

Cladtec, a Division of SAS Global Corporation

Longview, Texas | Full-Time

About Cladtec

Cladtec is a division of SAS Global Corporation specializing in engineered wear solutions, custom fabrication, hardfacing, and wear-resistant components for demanding industrial applications. Based in Longview, Texas, Cladtec operates as a small, close-knit team while benefiting from the resources, experience, and support of SAS Global Corporation.

This combination gives employees the opportunity to work directly across projects, collaborate closely with customers and team members, and see their work progress from initial concept through fabrication and installation.

About the Role

Cladtec is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Longview team. This hands-on position combines engineering, design, estimating, and project coordination for custom assemblies, fabricated components, and specialized machinery.

The Project Engineer manages technical project activities from initial customer requirements through estimating, design, fabrication, and installation. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both the technical design side of engineering and the practical side of working with Manufacturing, vendors, customers, and field installations to bring a project to completion.

What You'll Do
  • Review customer specifications, blueprints, drawings, and related documentation to identify project requirements and clarify technical details.
  • Develop and issue design drawings, installation drawings, shop drawings, and detail drawings for fabrication and field use.
  • Prepare cost and material estimates and job quotes, including labor, materials, production requirements, outside services, quantities, and alternative fabrication methods.
  • Review estimated versus actual job costs to support project cost control and improve future estimating accuracy.
  • Solicit and evaluate quotes from outside vendors for materials, processes, and services.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing to confirm design feasibility, fabrication methods, capacity, production timelines, and cost assumptions.
  • Support new product development and testing based on customer and project requirements.
  • Coordinate project submittals, drawing reviews, and project timelines.
  • Conduct field work as needed, including obtaining measurements, verifying site conditions, overseeing installation, and working directly with customers.
  • Maintain required project documentation and follow company safety and quality standards.

What We're Looking For
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience using AutoCAD Mechanical 2D; AutoCAD 3D Inventor experience is a plus.
  • Cost estimating experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or industrial environment required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Understanding of drafting techniques and mechanical design principles.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate timelines to ensure on-time completion.
  • Fabrication shop experience preferred.
  • Experience with metal forming, machining, or fabrication is a plus.

Work Environment

This position includes a combination of office, shop floor, customer-site, and project-site work. Approximately 15% domestic and international travel may be required.

Candidates should be comfortable working in industrial environments that may include heat, heights, confined spaces, stairs, and loud or dusty shop conditions. Project needs may occasionally require extended hours, night shifts, or weekend work.

Why Cladtec?

At Cladtec, you'll be part of a small team where your work has a direct and visible impact. Rather than working on only one piece of a project, you'll have the opportunity to be involved from the initial customer need through estimating, design, fabrication, and installation.

  • You'll get the collaborative environment and hands-on experience of a smaller operation, backed by the resources and industry experience of SAS Global Corporation.
