How much do engineering lab tech jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for engineering lab tech in the United States is $29.65, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $22.84 and $35.10 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Lab Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Lab Tech, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, experience with laboratory testing procedures, and typically an associate degree or technical certification in engineering technology. Familiarity with lab equipment, data acquisition systems, and software such as AutoCAD or LabVIEW is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork skills help you excel in supporting engineers and maintaining accurate results. These skills ensure precise data collection, effective collaboration, and reliable support for engineering projects.

What are some typical challenges an Engineering Lab Tech may encounter when supporting multiple projects simultaneously?

Engineering Lab Techs often juggle tasks for various projects at once, which can make prioritizing workload and managing time challenging. Balancing urgent requests, maintaining equipment, and ensuring accurate data collection require strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Effective communication with engineers and project leads is essential to clarify priorities, prevent bottlenecks, and support smooth workflow in a dynamic lab environment.

What are Engineering Lab Techs?

Engineering Lab Technicians, often called Engineering Lab Techs, are professionals who assist engineers and scientists in research, development, and testing of products, equipment, or systems. They typically set up, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment, record and analyze data, and help ensure experiments and prototypes run smoothly. Their work supports innovation in fields like electronics, manufacturing, civil engineering, and more. Engineering Lab Techs play a key role in troubleshooting and improving designs by providing accurate data and hands-on technical support.

What is the difference between Engineering Lab Tech vs Mechanical Technician?

AspectEngineering Lab TechMechanical Technician
CredentialsAssociate's degree or technical certification in engineering technologyHigh school diploma or technical training in mechanical systems
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, research facilities, testing environmentsManufacturing plants, maintenance workshops, field sites
Industry UsageEngineering firms, research institutions, product developmentManufacturing, maintenance, equipment repair

Engineering Lab Techs primarily work in labs supporting research and development, focusing on testing and data collection. Mechanical Technicians often work in industrial settings, maintaining and repairing mechanical systems. While both roles require technical skills, Engineering Lab Techs focus more on testing and analysis, whereas Mechanical Technicians emphasize hands-on repair and maintenance.
