What is an engineering drawing?

An Engineering Drawing job involves creating detailed technical drawings and blueprints used in manufacturing, construction, and product design. These drawings communicate specifications, dimensions, and materials to engineers, architects, and production teams. Professionals in this role use CAD software and traditional drafting techniques to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Strong attention to detail and knowledge of engineering principles are essential for success in this field.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in engineering drawing?

A typical day for an Engineering Drawing professional involves creating and revising technical drawings, interpreting design specifications, and collaborating closely with engineers and project managers to ensure accuracy and feasibility. You'll frequently use CAD software to transform conceptual sketches or engineering notes into detailed blueprints and technical plans. Additionally, you may review and update existing drawings based on feedback or project changes, and occasionally conduct site visits to verify specifications. Regular communication with team members helps address design challenges and keeps projects on schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the engineering drawing position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Drawing professional, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, proficiency in technical drafting, and strong attention to detail, often backed by a degree or certification in engineering, drafting, or a related field. Familiarity with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate with engineers and project teams are important soft skills. These skills ensure the production of precise and accurate drawings that are critical for successful engineering projects and team coordination.

Job description

Mechanical Design Engineer โ€“ Robotics & Automation

๐Ÿ“ Columbus, OH | 100% Onsite

๐Ÿ’ฐ $90Kโ€“$115K+ | Direct Hire

๐Ÿš€ Build the Hardware Behind the Future of Manufacturing

What if the mechanical systems you designed weren't just going into a machineโ€”but were helping redefine how manufacturing gets done?

We're looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join an innovative robotics and automation team developing next-generation systems for industrial manufacturing. This is a highly hands-on opportunity where you'll take designs from concept โ†’ CAD โ†’ prototype โ†’ build โ†’ real-world deployment.

You'll work on electromechanical components, welding fixtures, tooling, and robotic cells that enable robots to perform complex manufacturing tasks safely, reliably, and repeatedly.

If you love SolidWorks, automation, robotics, fixtures, and actually seeing your designs come to life, this is an opportunity worth exploring.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design welding fixtures, tooling, and robotic cell layouts for automated robotic welding systems.
  • Create manufacturing-ready drawings, assemblies, layouts, and BOMs using SolidWorks and GD&T.
  • Perform structural analysis and design validation using SolidWorks Simulation / FEA.
  • Design and integrate pneumatic and low-voltage electrical components into mechanical systems.
  • Build and test prototypes and work directly with the manufacturing team to validate designs.
  • Get hands-on with machine shop work, assembly, builds, kitting, and installations when needed.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues during system builds and field deployments.
  • Implement engineering changes based on manufacturing and field feedback.
  • Partner with Manufacturing and Supply Chain to reduce costs, improve part availability, and standardize components.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 2โ€“6+ years of mechanical design experience in automation, robotics, machinery, or a similar environment.
  • Experience designing fixtures, tooling, robotic cells, or production automation equipment.
  • Strong SolidWorks skills, including experience with assemblies, drawings, GD&T, and FEA.
  • Ability to create detailed, manufacturing-ready engineering drawings.
  • Working knowledge of pneumatics, electrical interfaces, and mechanical integration.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems and engineering change processes.
  • Hands-on mindsetโ€”you enjoy getting out from behind the computer and seeing how your designs perform on the shop floor.

Why This Role Stands Out

๐Ÿ”ฅ You're not just designingโ€”you'll build and validate what you design.

๐Ÿค– Work directly with robotics, automation, and AI-driven manufacturing technology.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Take projects from CAD all the way through prototype and deployment.
