What is an engineering drawing?

An Engineering Drawing job involves creating detailed technical drawings and blueprints used in manufacturing, construction, and product design. These drawings communicate specifications, dimensions, and materials to engineers, architects, and production teams. Professionals in this role use CAD software and traditional drafting techniques to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Strong attention to detail and knowledge of engineering principles are essential for success in this field.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in engineering drawing?

A typical day for an Engineering Drawing professional involves creating and revising technical drawings, interpreting design specifications, and collaborating closely with engineers and project managers to ensure accuracy and feasibility. You'll frequently use CAD software to transform conceptual sketches or engineering notes into detailed blueprints and technical plans. Additionally, you may review and update existing drawings based on feedback or project changes, and occasionally conduct site visits to verify specifications. Regular communication with team members helps address design challenges and keeps projects on schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the engineering drawing position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Drawing professional, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, proficiency in technical drafting, and strong attention to detail, often backed by a degree or certification in engineering, drafting, or a related field. Familiarity with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate with engineers and project teams are important soft skills. These skills ensure the production of precise and accurate drawings that are critical for successful engineering projects and team coordination.

Position Overview
BLOC Resources is seeking an experienced Drafter 3 to support engineering and design activities for utility and plant-related projects in Forest Park, Georgia. This position is ideal for an experienced drafting professional with a strong background in 2D and 3D CAD, engineering drawings, plant modifications, and field data collection.
The Drafter 3 will work closely with designers, engineers, plant personnel, and other project stakeholders to develop and revise detailed engineering drawings and models. The successful candidate must be able to interpret technical information, translate engineering concepts into accurate drawings, and support retrofit and modification projects within an operating plant environment.
This position requires approximately 7-10 years of drafting experience and the ability to work independently while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, accuracy, and design excellence.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed 2D drawings and 3D CAD models based on information, sketches, specifications, and design direction provided by engineers and designers.
  • Revise and update existing engineering drawings to support plant retrofit, modification, and upgrade projects.
  • Review existing drawings and design documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency with project requirements.
  • Participate in plant-site walkdowns to obtain field measurements, dimensional information, equipment locations, and other data required to support engineering designs.
  • Incorporate field-verified information into drawings and models.
  • Coordinate with engineering and design personnel to resolve drawing discrepancies and clarify technical requirements.
  • Maintain drawing accuracy, quality, organization, and appropriate revision control throughout the design process.
  • Apply applicable engineering design principles, drafting practices, standards, and procedures.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving design or constructability issues.
  • Support project teams in meeting established schedules, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Lead or coordinate smaller drafting/design assignments or projects as required.
  • Communicate effectively with plant personnel, design engineers, project team members, and vendors.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships across engineering, design, operations, and vendor teams.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to quality, safety, accuracy, and design excellence.
  • Perform additional drafting and project-support responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • 7-10 years of professional drafting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with 2D and 3D CAD software.
  • Experience developing and revising engineering drawings and models.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, sketches, specifications, and engineering information.
  • Experience supporting engineering, industrial, utility, plant, or similar technical projects.
  • Strong understanding of drafting practices and engineering design principles and standards.
  • Experience collecting or incorporating field measurements and dimensional information into design documents.
  • Ability to independently manage assigned drafting responsibilities.
  • Ability to lead or coordinate a small project or design assignment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Drafting and Design or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Previous experience supporting plant retrofit or modification projects.
  • Experience conducting or supporting plant-site walkdowns.
  • Experience working directly with engineering teams, plant personnel, and vendors.
  • Previous experience within the utility, power generation, industrial, or energy sector is beneficial.
