Position Summary:

The Design Division Manager is an engineering manager and operations director for a fast-growing design division that specializes in low to mid-rise residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The manager oversees and seals the work product of a team of design engineers, drafters, and project managers, provides proposals for new work, and fosters new and maintains existing client relationships.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for profitable operation and growth of the design division and the achievement of long-term departmental goals as defined by the Firm Principal
  • Oversees preparation of structural drawings by design engineers and drafters by working closely with the design team to coordinate structural drawing layouts and connection details for low to mid-rise residential, commercial, and industrial projects
  • Ensures the quality and accuracy of structural construction documents produced by the design team, and finalizes and stamps structural drawings
  • Provides the administrative team with timely and accurate quotes for pricing and anticipated start and completion dates for projects
  • Builds and maintains the design team through hiring, training, incentivizing, and coaching team members.
  • Establishes standard work processes, automates processes, and codifies best practices for the performance and delivery of engineering plans and activities
  • Responsible for marketing the department’s services, fostering and maintaining client relationships, and ensuring exceptional customer service is provided by the Design Division

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises staff in the Design Division. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering (with a focus in structures) or equivalent and 10+ years of related experience and/or training; or a Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (M.S. or M.C.E.) or equivalent and 7+ years of related experience and/or training;
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Certification required
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building Codes, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to write reports and other business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; drafting software (AutoCAD or similar); structural calculation software (Enercalc and RetainPro or similar); and structural modeling software (RISA 2D/3D or similar).

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Performance of site visits and other field work often requires crawling through confined spaces beneath structures and/or traversing and climbing through unfinished attics.
