Job description

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates for the temporary (two year) full time position of Engineering Assistant in the Utilities Division of the Operations Department. 

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Utilities, the Engineering Assistant provides a combination of specialized administrative and technical support services for the Utilities Division. This role is responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks that assist in the planning, operation, and management of utilities infrastructure, including water, wastewater, stormwater, and streetlighting systems. Work includes responding to routine inquiries, processing applications, as well as the operational monitoring, collection and input of data. The Engineering Assistant drafts correspondence, assists in maintaining and updating records/asset inventories and provides financial support services.


  • Secondary School Graduation plus completion of post-secondary coursework in either environmental science, water/wastewater operations, engineering technology, data management, asset management, or related administrative/technical fields.
  • Four (4) years of administrative and/or technical support experience in either a utilities, engineering, water/wastewater, or public works environment.
  • Experience with field sampling or meter reading is considered an asset.
  • WHMIS Certificate โ€“ provided by employer
  • Valid First Aid Level 1 with CPR C
  • Valid Class 5 Driversโ€™ License
  • EOCP Operator-in-Training (OIT) certification is considered an asset.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Guaranteed 35 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and eligible for flex time. This position may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings. Please note this position is not eligible for Work-From-Home consideration. 


Wage rate in 2 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $41.15 - $42.40 per hour (2026 rates). Benefits are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
