Job description

The City of Valparaiso is seeking a Chief Deputy Engineer. This position serves as a key leader within the Engineering Department, providing administrative, managerial, and professional engineering support to the Engineering Director. The Chief Deputy Engineer plays a central role in planning, designing, and overseeing infrastructure projects, while supporting the City’s stormwater management program and capital improvement initiatives. Reports to the Engineering Director.

Qualifications Include:
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record
  • Must pass preemployment drug test and essential function screening
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in civil engineering design and or management, preferably with a municipality or consulting engineer
  • Experience reviewing plans for roads, streets, drainage, sewers, water mains, grading, and specifications preferred
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Indiana preferred
  • Position Expectations Include:
  • Lead capital planning and management for stormwater and roadway assets
  • Design and oversee projects involving roads, sidewalks, sewers, water mains, and drainage improvements
  • Supervise assigned staff including training, goal setting, and performance oversight
  • Oversee consultants and contractors on capital improvement projects
  • Attend and present at Board, Commission, and Traffic and Safety Committee meetings
  • Conduct field inspections and enforce compliance through warnings, fines, or stop work orders when necessary
  • Respond to public concerns related to drainage, traffic, construction, and code compliance
  • Ensure construction quality control and adherence to specifications
  • Review plans and specifications for compliance with City, Utility, and Stormwater standards
  • Direct and collaborate with survey and GIS teams for data collection and analysis
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies including IDEM, DNR, and ACOE, etc.
  • Assist with consultant selection, contract management, and project coordination
  • Identify and pursue grant funding opportunities
  • Support development and maintenance of the ADA Transition Plan
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

    The City of Valparaiso provides a competitive salary structure. Pay for this position will be up to $110,000 annually dependent on the candidate’s education, experience, and qualifications.

    The position is exempt commensurate with FLSA requirements and is scheduled for a minimum of 40 hours per week.
