Their role bridges the gap between technical engineering tasks and organizational leadership.

How does an Engineer Manager typically support professional development within their team?

Engineer Managers play a key role in fostering the growth of their team members by providing regular feedback, identifying learning opportunities, and encouraging participation in training or mentorship programs. They often help engineers set clear career goals, guide them through skill development, and advocate for their advancement within the organization. If you are excited by helping fulfill the basic right to know what the content we consume is, then this role is made for you. Lead and empower a team of accomplished engineers who are dedicated to delivering transparency, attribution, and provenance to all creators.
As an outstanding technologist you are driven to apply phenomenal tools, just enough process, and steadfast quality. Your primary responsibilities will be to lead a team of SRE engineers, while also getting your hands into the code. You'll help ensure that our SDKs, services, and web applications have proper guardrails and that spinning up new services is straightforward.
This is an exceptional opportunity for profound impact within the news and creative industries, to lead versatile engineers, and to be at the forefront of the movement creating a more credible internet.
What You'll Do
  • Lead and develop an engineering team: you will guide and mentor a small, dedicated group of engineers throughout the entire development process, from research and technical design to security assessment, implementation, and delivery. You will ensure smooth handoffs and releases with internal partners.
  • Collaborate with product management and clients: you will work closely with product leadership, customers, and open-source developers to define and refine the roadmap, priorities, and schedule.
  • Make data-driven decisions: rely on a combination of data and your instincts to make informed decisions and drive progress. Balancing speed and quality will be instrumental.
  • Advocate for engineering excellence: you will champion engineering excellence, contributing to the architecture and high-level structure of our applications. Your depth of technical expertise will ensure that our products are built with high quality, developer experience, and scalability in mind.
  • Drive culture and process improvements: You will not only manage your team but also improvements across the entire engineering team. Your insights and experience will help shape engineering practices.
  • Actively participate in architectural discussions, proposing innovative solutions to complex technical challenges and driving consensus among stakeholders.
  • Ensure that there is clear documentation so developers can build on top of proper runbooks, baseline metrics, etc.
  • Track emerging technologies so our services stay up to date to match

What you'll need to succeed
To succeed in this role, the following skills and qualifications are crucial:
  • CS degree or related degree, or equivalent experience
  • Software engineering experience: 5 years or more of experience in software engineering is required.
  • Leadership experience: a minimum of 2 years of experience successfully leading a software engineering team.
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructure as code such as OpenTofu, Terraform, etc
  • Experience with container orchestration via Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, ArgoCD, and other similar tools
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tooling such as Grafana, Cortex, Prometheus, Splunk, Sentry, New Relic
  • A record of developing, leading, coaching, and mentoring software engineers is vital. You can foster a positive environment, ensuring your team's professional development.

Pluses
  • Experience building on top of platforms to cater to team-specific needs
  • Experience with performance and UI testing via tools such as K6 and Playwright
  • Distributed team experience: you know how to work in a diverse team spread across different time zones but relish face-to-face time with your team when you have the opportunity.
