Associate Engineers are entry-level engineering professionals who support more experienced engineers in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various projects in their field. They typically work under supervision and assist with tasks such as drafting technical documents, conducting research, analyzing data, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Associate Engineers often gain practical experience and training to advance to higher-level engineering roles as they develop their skills.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in fields such as software, petroleum, and aerospace engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, holding advanced certifications, or managing large projects and teams.

What can you do with an Associate in engineering?

An associate degree in engineering prepares individuals for technical roles such as engineering technician, CAD drafter, or quality control inspector. These positions often involve supporting engineering projects, using tools like AutoCAD or MATLAB, and may require certification or on-the-job training to develop specialized skills.

What Is an Associate Engineer?

An associate engineer is a lower level engineer in many fields of engineering, including environmental, civil, and mechanical. The title denotes rank and experience level. As an associate engineer, your typical job duties involve analyzing project plans, designing products, maintaining equipment, closely following specifications and procedures, and writing reports. The specific duties vary widely depending upon your field and employer. This career usually requires at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering and obtaining a license in your state. Additional qualifications include relevant work experience, strong technical skills, and a familiarity with your specific industry.

What are some typical challenges Associate Engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to industry roles?

Associate Engineers often find the transition from academic projects to industry roles challenging due to differences in project scope, teamwork dynamics, and pace. In industry, you’ll likely work on larger, multi-disciplinary teams where effective communication and collaboration are crucial. Job description

Associate Engineer
Department: Civil/Municipal
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: East Brunswick, NJ
Compensation: $65,000 - $75,000 / year
Description
Associate Engineer
Ready to build a career, not just start a job? Artheon is looking for curious, driven engineers to join our growing team and help shape the infrastructure that communities rely on every day. Whether your background is in civil engineering, environmental science, or infrastructure design, you'll find real projects, real mentorship, and real room to grow here - not busywork on the sidelines.
About Artheon
Artheon is a trusted engineering and consulting firm offering services that rival large organizations while maintaining the personalized client relationships of a boutique firm. With expertise spanning civil/site engineering, environmental permitting, transportation infrastructure, construction management, and advanced surveying technologies, we deliver high-quality, timely solutions to local, state, and federal clients.
About this role
This role is a launchpad, not a landing spot. Artheon invests in early-career engineers because we promote from within - your growth is the plan, not an afterthought. As an Associate Engineer, you'll get hands-on exposure across municipal engineering disciplines - transportation, water and wastewater, infrastructure - and see firsthand how a project moves from first sketch to ribbon-cutting.
If you're the kind of person who wants to understand why things are built the way they are, not just how, this is where that curiosity gets put to work.
Grow Your Career with Blueprint
This role includes a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program for engineers looking to grow beyond the typical entry-level experience. Over six months, participants take part in a hands-on curriculum covering professional development, business acumen, and project delivery - including case studies, simulations, and role-play exercises. The program covers topics like project economics, communication, and leadership fundamentals, and concludes with an in-person capstone event where participants present their work and outline goals for the year ahead.
Your Future Starts With A Plan.
What You'll Do
Municipal Review & Technical Analysis
  • Review site plans, subdivision and land development applications, and capital improvement projects for compliance with municipal ordinances and standards
  • Support planning board and zoning board reviews by preparing technical comments and reports
  • Be the clear, professional voice in conversations with boards, applicants, inspectors, and your internal team

Engineering & Design
  • Get hands-on with design work on municipal infrastructure projects like roadway improvements - plans, specifications, and everything in between
  • Run engineering calculations and analysis alongside senior engineers who'll show you the ropes

Construction Administration
  • Get out in the field: coordinate with inspectors and see real conditions up close
  • Learn how projects actually get built, not just designed

Mentorship & Growth
  • Work side-by-side with experienced engineers (including recently licensed PEs) who are invested in your success
  • Take part in Artheon's peer mentor program and other professional development opportunities

What you bring
  • A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or you're on track to take the exam
  • Confidence communicating in writing and in person - including public meetings
  • Genuine interest in municipal engineering work
  • Willingness to work from and commit to the Neptune/Tinton Falls, NJ office

Bonus points for
  • Internship or co-op experience in civil or municipal engineering
  • Familiarity with municipal infrastructure, transportation, or water/wastewater projects
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar software

Benefits
The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company's good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
Artheon offers a competitive compensation package including medical, prescription, dental and vision coverage, 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, educational assistance program and paid time off/parental leave.
