What is an engineering manager?

An Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees engineering teams, guiding them to achieve project goals and company objectives. They are responsible for managing people, processes, and resources, ensuring that engineering projects are completed on time and within budget. Engineering Managers also collaborate with other departments, mentor team members, and help develop technical strategies. Their role bridges the gap between technical engineering tasks and organizational leadership.

How does an engineer manager typically support professional development within their team?

Engineer Managers play a key role in fostering the growth of their team members by providing regular feedback, identifying learning opportunities, and encouraging participation in training or mentorship programs. They often help engineers set clear career goals, guide them through skill development, and advocate for their advancement within the organization. By promoting a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, Engineer Managers help team members stay motivated and aligned with both personal and company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong technical background in engineering principles, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly certifications like PMP or Agile Scrum Master are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills help you motivate teams and manage stakeholders effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering successful projects, fostering a productive team environment, and driving organizational goals.

How much should an engineering manager be paid?

The salary of an engineering manager varies based on experience, industry, and location, but typically ranges from $100,000 to $180,000 annually in many regions. Senior engineering managers or those in high-demand sectors can earn over $200,000, often supplemented with bonuses and stock options. Compensation also depends on skills in project management, leadership, and technical expertise.

Project Controls & Execution:

  • Work with Project Management and project controls staff to develop, monitor, and maintain project schedules and budgets.

  • Support a robust changemanagement program, ensuring scope, hours, and cost impacts are accurately identified and communicated.

  • Monitor engineering progress, productivity, quality control, and document control; implement corrective actions or recovery plans when required.

  • Review project reports, schedules, and cost performance data to ensure accurate reporting and forecasting.

Client, Stakeholder & Subconsultant Coordination:

  • Support the Project Manager during client meetings and technical presentations.

  • May participate in contract negotiations focusing on technical delivery requirements.

  • Monitor and coordinate subconsultants' performance, technical deliverables, and compliance with contract requirements.

  • Facilitate project meetings with clients, permitting agencies, and other external stakeholders.

Business Development Support:

  • Contribute to proposal efforts, including development of scope, labor estimates, assumptions, and written technical content.

  • Assist in identifying new business opportunities and promote the firm's technical capabilities to existing and prospective clients.

  • Participate in opportunity evaluation, consultant selection, and preparation of qualifications/experience packages.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support project, team, or business needs.

About you
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.

  • Minimum 12 years of engineering experience, including at least two years in a senior technical or leadership role.

  • Significant experience in power plant design, execution, or operations is strongly preferred.

  • Experience developing and reviewing calculations, P&IDs, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.

  • Background in industrial facilities or other energy generation systems is beneficial.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multidiscipline engineering teams and coordinate complex technical work.

  • Strong understanding of power plant thermodynamics, heattransfer systems, fluid dynamics, and equipment selection.

  • Familiarity with EPC delivery models, engineering design processes, and industry standards.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to represent the firm to clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
