What is an engineering manager?

An Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees engineering teams, guiding them to achieve project goals and company objectives. They are responsible for managing people, processes, and resources, ensuring that engineering projects are completed on time and within budget. Engineering Managers also collaborate with other departments, mentor team members, and help develop technical strategies. Their role bridges the gap between technical engineering tasks and organizational leadership.

How does an engineer manager typically support professional development within their team?

Engineer Managers play a key role in fostering the growth of their team members by providing regular feedback, identifying learning opportunities, and encouraging participation in training or mentorship programs. They often help engineers set clear career goals, guide them through skill development, and advocate for their advancement within the organization. By promoting a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, Engineer Managers help team members stay motivated and aligned with both personal and company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong technical background in engineering principles, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly certifications like PMP or Agile Scrum Master are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills help you motivate teams and manage stakeholders effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering successful projects, fostering a productive team environment, and driving organizational goals.

About the job

Like Google’s own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer goes beyond just Search. Software Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of Engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure Engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a Software Engineering Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. Teams work across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large‑scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design and more. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional software engineers are just getting started – and as a manager, you guide the way.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

As part of this team, you will build the reliable, scalable identity infrastructure that secures Google Cloud. At the core is Cloud Gaia, which powers service accounts, workload identity, and federation at millions of queries per second while meeting strict availability and compliance standards. You will lead critical, high‑traffic data‑plane services and develop a team of highly talented engineers. In this role, you will oversee the secure life‑cycle of authentication credentials, ensuring safe, reliable, and easily adoptable identity verification for all users and workloads across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Establish the strategy for the next‑gen authentication stack for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Identity.
  • Enable agentic identity through credentials exchange for agents.
  • Develop and grow talent through hiring, mentoring, and coaching engineers.
  • Drive technical projects and provide technical leadership to inspire the team to innovate, design, and implement advanced capabilities for identity compliance and sovereignty.
  • Collaborate across all of Technical Infrastructure and GCP with product managers, technical program managers, and other software engineering managers to deliver on product goals.
