What is an engineer helper?

Engineer Helpers assist engineers by performing tasks such as preparing materials, operating tools, and helping with the installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment. They support engineering projects by gathering data, organizing supplies, and ensuring that work areas are safe and efficient. Their role is essential for the smooth execution of engineering tasks, and they often work under the direct supervision of engineers or senior technicians.

How does an engineer helper typically collaborate with engineers and other team members on a project?

Engineer Helpers work closely with engineers by assisting with tasks such as setting up equipment, preparing materials, and performing routine maintenance or troubleshooting under supervision. They are often responsible for ensuring that workspaces are organized and that all tools are ready for use, which helps engineers focus on more complex technical aspects of a project. Collaboration also involves clear communication with both engineers and other support staff to ensure project timelines and safety protocols are followed. This hands-on teamwork provides valuable learning opportunities and insight into engineering processes, making it a great entry point for those interested in advancing within the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer Helper, you need a basic understanding of engineering principles, strong mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, blueprint reading, and safety protocols is typically required, with OSHA certification often preferred. Strong teamwork, communication, and reliability help you stand out in assisting engineers and following instructions accurately. These skills and qualities are important to ensure safe, efficient support for engineering projects and contribute to successful project outcomes.

Job Summary

Help power the future of the grid.
Join a team at the forefront of integrating renewable energy and modernizing the electric system through advanced SCADA and data communications.

The Generation Interconnection Data Communications Team plays a critical role in keeping the grid reliable while enabling new energy resources such as solar, battery storage, and wind to come online. We help design and maintain the control and monitoring systems that operators depend on every second to safely run the power system-and we're actively shaping how those systems evolve for the next generation of the grid.

As a SCADA Engineer, you'll work on high-impact projects that directly support grid reliability and the integration of renewables.

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are the tools that give grid operators real-time visibility and control of substations and field equipment-essentially the "eyes and hands" of the power system. You'll help design, build, and support these systems so operators can monitor conditions, respond to issues, and keep electricity flowing safely and reliably.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and implement SCADA systems for substations and new generation interconnections
  • Build intuitive HMI displays that provide real-time insight into grid conditions
  • Support modern data communication architectures across the grid

This role goes beyond traditional SCADA-you'll be part of a team that is:

  • Integrating renewable and distributed energy resources
  • Applying modern standards like IEC 61850
  • Exploring Software Defined Networking (SDN) and advanced communication architectures
  • Supporting evolving protection, control, and automation strategies

You'll play a direct role in grid reliability while helping modernize the system and integrate the next generation of energy resources.
