Job description

Firefighter Apprenticeship Program

Capital City Fire Rescue (CCFR) is pleased to announce a second round of our paid Firefighter Apprenticeship Program. This comprehensive 10-month initiative offers a direct pathway into a fulfilling and stable career in emergency service, with no prior experience required. CCFR will select four (4) highly motivated individuals to participate in the program. Apprentices will receive paid, hands-on training while earning industry-recognized certifications, including Alaska EMT-1 and IFSAC Firefighter I. Designed to eliminate traditional barriers to entry, the program provides a unique opportunity to gain essential skills and qualifications without the need for college enrollment, relocation, or extended volunteer service. Upon successful completion, apprentices will be eligible to apply for permanent, full-time positions with Capital City Fire Rescue.

Working hours and location:

Capital City Fire Rescue (CCFR) provides 24/7 emergency services to the City and Borough of Juneau. During the initial 8 to 12 weeks of the apprenticeship program, participants will work a standard Monday through Friday schedule, consisting of 40 hours per week with 8-hour days. Once EMT certification is obtained and firefighter training commences, apprentices will transition to a 24-hour shift schedule and reside at the fire station during their assigned shifts. CCFR operates two primary live-in stations: the Juneau Station, located in the downtown area, and the Glacier Station, situated near the Juneau International Airport. Additional stations include Douglas, Auke Bay, and Lynn Canal. All shift personnel work a rotating schedule of 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off.

There will be an open house at the Glacier Fire Station, located at 1700 Crest Street from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 23. Please plan to join us to get a tour of the facilities and learn more about the program.

Typical Responsibilities

Description of what you will be doing:

Phase 1: Department Operations & EMT-1 Certification (Weeks 112)

  • Week 1: Intro to operations, communications, driving, PPE, and basic skills
  • Weeks 28: EMT-1 certification via APEC and local protocol training
  • Weeks 912: Shift integration and firefighter fundamentals
  • Benchmarks: EMT certification, protocol testing, skill proficiency (14 AFSC skills), and written exam

Phase 2: EMT-1 Precepting & Hazmat Awareness (Weeks 1322)

  • Supervised EMT practice, fire behavior, equipment, and hazmat basics
  • Benchmarks: Precepting completion, 20 skill demonstrations, and a written exam

Phase 3: Suppression & Rescue Operations (Weeks 2340)

  • Interior fire attack, search and rescue, firefighter survival
  • Benchmarks: Written exam and demonstration of 20 new skills, plus continued proficiency in prior skills

Phase 4: Hazmat Operations (Weeks 4142)

  • Focused training on hazardous materials operations
  • Benchmarks: Written exam and demonstration of 15 hazmat-specific skills

Final Testing & Employment

Weeks 4344: Competency & Certification

  • Week 43: Final skills and physical ability testing
  • Week 44: AFSC/IFSAC certification exams (Firefighter I & Hazmat Ops)
  • Successful candidates receive AHJ Firefighter certification

Post-Program Employment

  • Must pass a physical ability test
  • Apply through CBJ Human Resources
  • Hiring based on PAT scores, apprenticeship performance, and number of available positions.

Minimum Qualifications

Firefighter EMT Apprentice (Range 722) $46,824.96 Annually Education: High School graduation or valid GED certificate. Other: Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment. A valid Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment. Certification(s): Valid Emergency Trauma Technician Certification within four (4) weeks of appointment and for continued employment. *Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I or higher within one year of appointment.

Firefighter- EMT Trainee- (Range 724) $52,648.96 Annually Education: High School graduation or a valid GED certificate. Other: Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment. A valid Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment. Certification(s): Certification by the State of Alaska as an Emergency Medical Technician I or higher at time of appointment and for continued employment. Positions requiring Scene Support as a Primary Duty: Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter within eighteen (18) months of appointment.

Firefighter- EMT I - (Range 726) $58,502.08 Annually Education: High School graduation or a valid GED certificate. Other: Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment. A valid Alaska Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment. Certification(s): Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter I or an equivalent certification as determined by the Fire Chief at time of appointment. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I or higher or an EMT certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
