Overview
Coordinates with patients, physicians and operating room to schedule surgeries and pre-operative testing with minimal guidance. Acts as a liaison between patient and provider. Is responsible to verify insurance benefits, pre-certify or obtain authorization for the surgical services, calculate patient out of pocket expense, and counsel patients prior to surgery regarding financial responsibilities. Facilitates efficient workflow, supports appropriate use of technology, highly supportive of all staff roles as needed, and fosters effective communication. Previous surgery scheduling and computer/EMR experience is required. Provides support to provider and colleagues as needed.
Responsibilities
Demonstrates proficiency with coordinating surgery schedule with patient, physician and operating room (main campus/BOSC/RSH) and communicate it with other staff, practice manager, and provider. Utilize EMR system for all scheduling, tracking, and notes documentation and obtain a SME (subject matter expert) status. Obtains precertification or proper insurance approval prior to surgical procedures and appropriately documents the information. Verifies patient eligibility and coverage for procedure; discusses potential financial obligations with patient. Maintain 100% compliance with surgical scheduling forms to include: Spanish and English consent forms, request to schedule surgery, pre-anesthesia questionnaire, and any required preoperative testing/clearances; Communicates special equipment/instruments/supply requests to the operating room and/or communicates to OR desk any changes in OR schedule and need for authorization # prior to patient having surgery. Extensive follow-up with patients to identify patient questions and scheduling concerns, assess patient needs, and provide patient-specific education as necessary; communicate updates with staff. Confirms pre-operative and postoperative appointments have been scheduled. Monitors surgery schedule and ensures optimization of resources and workflow, making changes when necessary. Supportive of all staff roles as needed.
Qualifications
Previous surgery scheduling and computer/EMR experience is required. Knowledge and experience with websites for insurance verification/eligibility preferred. Prefer CMA, a graduate of a Medical Assistant program. Computer training course or acquired competency with computer skills.
