Who are we?
San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) envisions a future where health justice is achieved for all people living with or at risk for HIV. Our mission is to promote health, wellness, and social justice for communities most impacted by HIV through sexual health and substance use services, advocacy, and partnership. We need passionate advocates for social change that embody our five key values: Justice, Dignity, Courage, Leadership, and Excellence.
What is the position?
Lab Technicians at SFAF perform high-volume phlebotomy crucial to our mission to provide sexual health services. Lab techs will manage the processing of specimens, perform research related lab duties, perform quality assurance, interpret HIV/HCV antibody tests amongst other daily tasks. As part of our mission at Magnet/Strut all staff members also serve as HIV testing counselors when needed in the clinic. This role is a crucial part of our front line services promoting sexual health in the most at risk communities in San Francisco.
What are the main responsibilities?

  • Perform high-volume phlebotomy in accordance with clinical protocols.
  • Perform quality assurance on lab tests and maintain accurate logs to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage and process specimens, including preparation for off-site laboratory transport.
  • Ensure all point-of-care tests are performed and documented per clinic guidelines.
  • Maintain clean, organized workstations, and ensure proper storage of supplies, samples, and equipment.
  • Serve as an HIV test counselor, providing education on HIV prevention, testing, and exposure window periods.
Who are we looking for?
  • Possession of California State Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II, Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certificate, or other degree that allows for performing venipunctures in the state of California.
  • Employee must maintain an active phlebotomy certification with the California Laboratory Field Service,
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Ability to use complex instruments and machines. Knowledge of computers and database is necessary to record information on the subject and the material tested or sampled.
  • Training in Good Clinical Practices, research ethics, IATA shipments, HIPAA Privacy and Security, Rapid Regulatory Compliance preferred.
  • Current California Certification as an HIV Counselor required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish, Russian, Cantonese, or ASL highly regarded.

Where is the position located?
This position is primarily located at 470 Castro St, San Francisco, however it may occasionally require traveling to other office locations or off-site meetings as required by the job. Role may include evening and weekend coverage.

Hourly Rate:$34 - $37
Benefits :SFAF is proud to offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package for our full-time employees. We offer combined PTO/Sick Time Off of 24 days for the first two years of employment, 29 days after two years of employment. For retirement we offer a 403(b) Plan and SFAF matches employee contributes (1 to 1) up to 3% of Salary.
